Abstract

With the occurrence of an adding driving field, the properties of the dispersion and the absorption of a four-level system are changed greatly. The system can produce the normal and anomalous dispersion regions with proper parameters. Here, the driving fields can be seemed as knobs to manipulate the group velocity of a weak probe field between subluminal and superluminal.

Absorption-Free Sub- and Super-Luminal Light Propagation via Quantum Interference

Jianchun Wu, Zhengdong Liu, Jun Zheng

We investigate the dispersive and absorptive properties of an N-type four-level atomic system in three coherent fields, and consider the susceptibility mathematically. It is shown that the group velocity of the probe field exhibits sub- and super-luminal under some conditions, meanwhile the absorption coefficient keeps zero during the occurrence and transition process of sub- and super-luminal pulses.

Switching from normal dispersion to anomalous dispersion in a four-level atomic system

Zhi‐Hui Kang, Fan Meng, Yan-Ji Qu +4 more

Abstract The manipulation of the group velocity of light is very important in further information processing and quantum network. It is well known that subluminal and superluminal light propagation can be obtained by controlling the dispersion property of the experimental medium. In order to realize the switching from normal dispersion to anomalous dispersion at the same frequency, we investigate the dispersion and absorption properties of a four-level atomic system. By adjusting the intensity of an incoherent pump, we get transparent normal dispersion and lossless anomalous dispersion, which lead to subluminal and superluminal light propagation respectively. For a strong incoherent pump, the intensity of the coherent coupling field also can be used to realize a similar switching effect.

Knob for changing light propagation from subluminal to superluminal

G. S. Agarwal, Tarak Nath Dey, Sunish Menon

We show how the application of a coupling field connecting the two lower metastable states of a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system can produce a variety of effects on the propagation of a weak electromagnetic pulse. In principle the light propagation can be changed from subluminal to superluminal. The negative group index results from regions of anomalous dispersion and gain in susceptibility.

The Change of Group Velocity:from Subluminal to Superluminal Light Propagation in the V System

Zhihua Peng

This paper reveals that the group velocity of a weak laser probe field can be manipulated by controlling the intensity of the driving field applied to a near-degenerate closed three-level V system.Such control can even cause the probe propagation to change from subluminal to superluminal. And the results mentioned above can be understood in terms of dressed states.

The article explores the possibility of both subluminal and superluminal propagation in the same system. We find that the strength of the single coupling field and its detuning are like knobs to control propagation speed.
