Saturated absorption spectroscopy of 87Rb atoms using structured light: observation of narrow hyperfine and crossover resonances

Samim Akhtar, Aparajita Das, Jayanta K. Saha +1 more

Abstract An experiment on the saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) of 87Rb-D2 line is performed using the Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beam as structured light. The theoretical simulation of which is done by considering a four-level atom-laser coupled system. The theoretically simulated spectra fairly match with the experimentally observed spectra. The line-width narrowing behavior of both the observed hyperfine and crossover resonances in the Doppler-broadened probe absorption spectra is attributed by the spatially dependent Rabi frequency of the pump LG beam irrespective of the characteristics of the probe beam. The results also illustrated that the narrowing behavior of the line shapes of the hyperfine structure using the LG beam is universal in nature, i.e. irrespective of hyperfine or crossover transitions. This structured light-induced narrowing of line-width of the sub-Doppler hyperfine and crossover resonances can be utilized for high-precision laser frequency locking at a particular hyperfine or crossover transition. Moreover, a significant narrowing of hyperfine and crossover resonances with the variation of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) number of the LG beam shows that the generated SAS signal can be manipulated by using the OAM of the structured light as a control knob.

Doppler narrowing, Zeeman and laser beam-shape effects in $Λ$-type Electromagnetically Induced Transparency on the $^{85}$Rb D2 line in a vapor cell

Lu Ma, Georg A. Raithel

We study $Λ$-type Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) on the Rb D2 transition in a buffer-gas-free thermal vapor cell without anti-relaxation coating. Experimental data show distinguished features of velocity-selective optical pumping and one EIT resonance. The Zeeman splitting of the EIT line in magnetic fields up to 12 Gauss is investigated. One Zeeman component is free of the first-order shift and its second-order shift agrees well with theory. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of this magnetic-field-insensitive EIT resonance is reduced due to Doppler narrowing, scales linearly in Rabi frequency over the range studied, and reaches about 100~kHz at the lowest powers. These observations agree with an analytic model for a Doppler-broadened medium developed in Ref. \cite{PhysRevA.66.013805,7653385}. Numerical simulation using the Lindblad equation reveals that the transverse laser intensity distribution and two $Λ$-EIT systems must be included to fully account for the measured line width and line shape of the signals. Ground-state decoherence, caused by effects that include residual optical frequency fluctuations, atom-wall and trace-gas collisions, is discussed.

Spectral line narrowing due to velocity selective optical pumping on the D2 line hyperfine transitions in spatially restricted Cs vapor

C. Andreeva, T. A. Vartanyan, Petko Todorov +2 more

We report on the investigation of narrow sub-Doppler-width resonances observed at the D2 line of Cs atoms (Fg = 4 → Fe = 3, 4, 5 hyperfine transitions), confined in thin optical cells. These cells have a thickness of L = 6λ (λ = 852 nm) and L = 700 μm, and are irradiated by two narrow-band laser radiations (one with fixed and the other with scanned frequency). We show that for zero frequency detuning of the fixed-frequency laser from the Fg = 4 → Fe = 5 hyperfine transition, its absorption spectrum in the thin cell consists of resonances, centered at the respective hyperfine transitions. The spectral widths of these resonances range from 2 to 20 MHz, and they are characterized by a good contrast and extremely small Doppler background. This spectrum is highly sensitive to the frequency offset of the fixedfrequency laser. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the spatial restriction of Cs vapor suppresses the interaction of the light with atoms with significant velocity component along the direction of the laser beam propagation.
