Abstract

We theoretically consider a problem of generation of infrared pulses of superradiation (SR) in a dielectric medium hosting a dense ensemble of quantum dots produced using the narrow gap semiconductors. We have studied the influence of complex local-field corrections on cooperative optical processes in such a material due to essential modifications of the effective values of the spontaneous relaxation rates.

Cooperative effects in a quartz medium with quantum dots

Features of the generation of super radiance short pulses in a dielectric medium with quantum dots allowing for the nonlinear dissipative effects of the local field are considered. It is shown that the problem can be reduced to an equation of a nonlinear pendulum with an additional term for the harmonic loss/gain.

Influence of local-field effects on the dynamics of superradiance by a dense medium

Anatoli V. Andreev, P. V. Polevoy, Charles M. Bowden +1 more

The theory of superradiance by an ensemble of two-level atoms embedded in a dielectric host is developed. It is shown that the near dipole-dipole interaction of a dense collection of two-level atoms is enhanced by the presence of the host material, decreasing the pulse temporal width and increasing the peak pulse intensity of superradiative emission. The influence of the inversion-dependent detuning effect on the parameters of the emitted pulses is investigated.

Enhanced superradiance of quantum sources near nanoscaled media

Amir Sivan, Meir Orenstein

We develop a rigorous theory for nanophotonic cooperative spontaneous emission of an ensemble of quantum emitters near matter, which also incorporates absorption. Such theory is highly requested since one should expect that in the field of nanophotonics the close-by emitters will emit cooperatively simultaneously with strong interaction with the exotic metamaterial complex dielectric function. The closed-form model developed here considers the buildup both of interemitter correlation over time through emitter transitions via the mutual field and of geometry-induced spatial correlation. The presence of matter alters the local density of states (LDOS), resulting in modified decay rate and emission intensity for the entire ensemble relative to values of spontaneous emission in free space. The superradiant total emission is separable into a quantum-mechanical time-dependent part and a classical space-dependent part, both being functions of the LDOS. Two distinct radiative emitter--far-field coupling mechanisms, which together account for the superradiant emission, are obtained---the coupling of every individual emitter with the far field and the coupling of emitter pairs to the far field. The calculations for superradiating emitters near silver and near-zero epsilon (NZE) materials were performed with the following results: the silver sphere augments the superradiant far-field intensity and rate by up to 400 and 1000%, respectively, while the NZE sphere enhances the far-field intensity and rate of the superradiance by approximately 1400 and 400%, respectively.

Superradiance: exploiting quantum phase transition in the real world

Petr Vasilyev

Superradiance (SR), or cooperative spontaneous emission, has been predicted by R. Dicke before the invention of the laser. During the last few years one can see a renaissance of both experimental and theoretical studies of the superradiant phase transition in a variety of media, ranging from quantum dots and Bose condensates through to black holes. Until recently, despite of many years of research, SR has been considered as a phenomenon of pure scientific interest without obvious potential applications. However, recent investigations of the femtosecond SR emission generation from semiconductors have opened up some practical opportunities for the exploitation of this quantum optics phenomenon. Here we present a brief review of some features, advantages and potential applications of the SR generation from semiconductor laser structures

Three-Dimensional Dissipative Optical Solitons in a Dielectric Medium with Quantum Dots

Mikhail Yu. Gubin, A. Yu. Leksin, Sergei M Arakelyan +2 more

We consider the problem of formation of three-dimensional spatio-temporal dissipative solitons (laser bullets) in a dense ensemble of two-level quantum dots. The principal possibility of effective laser bullets generation in an all-dielectric metamaterials with quantum dots is shown. The phenomenon arises due to the simultaneous appearance of strong local field effects and significant corrections to diffraction effects during the propagation of short optical pulses in such medium.
