Conscious Control of an Electron

Abstract

I consider the possibility that the electron, not a human observer, precipitates the collapse of the electron's wavefunction when it is detected. This would seem to endow the electronic wavefunction with an elementary consciousness. If so, then perhaps a human consciousness could interact with the electronic consciousness to flip its spin. I propose an experiment to test this possibility, namely one in which the electron is the single valence electron of a magnesium ion immersed in a 50-gauss magnetic field. A dye laser shines on the ion and is tuned to bring about laser induced fluorescence (LIF) at a wavelength of 280 nm. The LIF is so strong that if the ion were shining in the visible range, it could be seen with the naked eye. Instead it is shining in the near ultra-violet, and a photomultiplier is used to detect the light. If a person can now lower the electron's energy minutely, then this will flip the electron's spin and the LIF will cease. If the person can succeed in flipping the electron's spin once again by raising its energy, then LIF is restored. By initiating LIF for long and short periods, such a person could send a lengthy International Morse Code message which could be read by anyone observing the ion’s output. We would see if a person succeeding in this task could send a message from increasingly distant points. If so, then the person's control could not be mediated by any fields currently known to physicists: electromagnetic, weak, strong, and gravitational. We would hypothesize a new kind of controlling field which does not weaken with distance, nor be attenuated by obstructions. Such a field might mediate distant healing and remote viewing. It might be identified with Chinese qi. We hypothesize that this conjectured field propagates in higher dimensional space-time to avoid obstructions, and converges on the target to avoid weakening. In this space, the field might travel faster than light does in the lower four dimensions of space and time.

Consciousness and Quantum-mechanical Wavefunctions

Ronald A. Bryan

I note the similarity of an electron's wavefunction to a human consciousness in three examples: (i) The diffraction of an electron's wavefunction by a double slit into two wavepackets and the reported location of a human consciousness in two separate regions of space; (ii) an electron wavefunction with spin-up and spin-down terms simultaneously and a person undecided on two possible courses of action; and (iii) two electrons' wavefunctions entangled and identical human twins suffering the same pain while separated by thousands of miles. I hypothesize that the electron's wavefunction and the human's consciousness are so similar that the electron's wavefunction is conscious and the human consciousness is a wavefunction. This marries consciousness with quantum mechanics. I suggest an experiment that might be due to a human conscious wavefunction's interacting with an electron's conscious wavefunction, namely, where a human volunteer attempts to mentally flip the spin of a lone electron. I give the details of such an atomic experiment. If successful, this phenomenon could be used to turn human thought into a PowerPoint message, projected onto a screen letter by letter.

Vacuum-field level shifts in a single atom mediated by a single distant mirror

Alex Wilson, PAVEL BOUCHEV, Jürgen Eschner +3 more

A single Ba/sup +/ ion is confined in a miniature Paul trap and Doppler cooled with green laser light at 493 nm and red light at 650 nm. A theoretical description of the experiment predicts that a level shift of the upper (P/sub 1/2/) state is associated with the modified decay. This level shift is observed in the following way: as the frequency detuning of the red laser is scanned across resonance, the phase between green and red fringes is recorded. Varying the mirror-ion distance leads to high-visibility interference fringes in the green fluorescence (/spl sim/60%) whilst the red fluorescence, that is transmitted by the mirror and detected by photomultiplier, is seen to be modulated with the same period but with lower visibility (/spl sim/1-2%). The modulation of the red light indicates a modified decay rate on the green transition, showing that the mirror changes the vacuum field at the green wavelength and leads to enhancement and inhibition of spontaneous decay from the upper state.

Advanced theory of consciousness

Carlo Roselli

The topic of this article is consciousness and, in it, I will theorize what consciousness is like and where it arises from. The work began to emerge and develop over time starting from my belief that consciousness is a physical self-referential phenomenon; thus, my attention was focused on the research for a self-referential process. I was confident that I could satisfy my curiosity through the reductionist method adopted by science. Unfortunately, neuroscientists and philosophers of mind realized that the attempts to explain consciousness with this method have all proved inconclusive. For this reason, they are now trying to address the problem of consciousness with non reductionist methods. As for me, I have always remained faithful to reductionism, but with the conviction that quantum mechanics, even though capable of making predictions with an extraordinary degree of accuracy, is a theory founded on wrong concepts. Thus, surprisingly, I have found a solution to the mystery of consciousness, perceiving a way to explain what it is like at its fundamental level in the field of quantum mechanics and, particularly, in one of its counterintuitive and generally less debated aspects among physicists today, but which aroused great interest in me: I am referring to the spin of the electron that will be described in this paper as a self-interacting process. This paper will also offer a rational explanation of the results obtainable in all experiments for measuring the spin of electrons through Stern-Gerlach magnets. In addition, my theory of consciousness is susceptible to experimental control.

Laser-induced-fluorescence imaging of a spin-polarized ultracold neutral plasma in a magnetic field

Grant M. Gorman, M. K. Warrens, S. J. Bradshaw +1 more

We report Doppler-sensitive laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) imaging of an ultracold neutral plasma in a magnetic field. Local values of ion density, hydrodynamic fluid velocity, temperature, and spin polarization are obtained using a fluorescence model based on velocity-resolved rate equations (REs) including the transfer of ions between states due to laser coupling and spontaneous emission. The RE approach captures optical pumping of ions into states that are not driven by the LIF excitation laser, and this is validated with experimental data. Combined molecular-dynamics and quantum-trajectories simulations verify that velocity-changing collisions have a negligible impact on the state population evolution for typical experimental conditions. Relative intensities of Zeeman components of the LIF spectra provide clear evidence that the ions are electron-spin-polarized when created by photoionization of magnetically trapped $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ atoms. This probe opens many possibilities for studying thermal transport and the equilibration of neutral plasmas in overlapping regimes of strong coupling and magnetization.

Neural Correlate of Consciousness in a Single Electron: Radical Answer to “Quantum Theories of Consciousness”

Victor Yu. Argonov

We argue that human consciousness may be a property of single electron in the brain. We suppose that each electron in the universe has at least primitive consciousness. Each electron subjectively “observes” its quantum dynamics (energy, momentum, “shape” of wave function) in the form of sensations and other mental phenomena. However, some electrons in neural cells have complex “human” consciousnesses due to complex quantum dynamics in complex organic environment. We discuss neurophysiological and physical aspects of this hypothesis and show that: (1) single chemically active electron has enough informational capacity to “contain” the richness of human subjective experience; (2) quantum states of some electrons might be directly influenced by human sensory data and have direct influence upon human behavior in real brain; (3) main physical and philosophical drawbacks of “conventional” “quantum theories of consciousness” may be solved by our hypothesis without much changes in their conceptual basis. We do not suggest any “new physics”, and our neuroscientific assumptions are similar to those used by other proponents of “quantum consciousness”. However, our hypothesis suggests radical changes in our view on human and physical reality.
