Highly selective population of two excited states in nonresonant two-photon absorption

Abstract

A nonresonant two-photon absorption process can be manipulated by tailoring the ultra-short laser pulse. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate a highly selective population of two excited states in the nonresonant two-photon absorption process by rationally designing a spectral phase distribution. Our results show that one excited state is maximally populated while the other state population is widely tunable from zero to the maximum value. We believe that the theoretical results may play an important role in the selective population of a more complex nonlinear process comprising nonresonant two-photon absorption, such as resonance-mediated (2+1)-three-photon absorption and (2+1)-resonant multiphoton ionization.

Coherent enhancement of resonance-mediated multiphoton absorption

In this paper, we theoretically investigate the coherent enhancement of resonance-mediated (2+2) four-photon absorption. It is found that by shaping the spectral phase with a π phase step, the resonance-mediated (2+2) four-photon transition probability can be enhanced. Furthermore, the coherent enhancement dependences on the detuning between the two two-photon absorptions, laser spectral bandwidth and laser centre frequency are explicitly discussed and analysed. We believe these theoretical results may play an important role in enhancing more complex resonance-mediated multiphoton absorption processes.

Precise control of state-selective excitation in stimulated Raman scattering

Shian Zhang, Junhui Shi, Hui Zhang +3 more

Multiphoton transitions can be manipulated by tailoring the ultrashort laser pulse. In this paper, we propose two schemes for achieving precise control of the selective excitation between two excited states in stimulated Raman-scattering process. We theoretically demonstrate that by properly designing the spectral phase distribution, the stimulated Raman transition probability for one excited state is kept at zero or a maximal value, while that for the other excited state can be continuously tuned over a wide range. Furthermore, the influence of the spectral bandwidth on the tunable range by the two schemes is discussed. We conclude that these schemes have significant application to the selective excitation of femtosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering.

Coherent phase control of resonance-mediated (2+1) three-photon absorption

Andrey Gandman, Lev Chuntonov, Leonid Rybak +1 more

Femtosecond coherent phase control of resonance mediated $(2+1)$ three-photon absorption is studied both theoretically and experimentally. The regime is perturbative of third order. The photoexcitation coherently combines elements of both nonresonant and resonance-mediated multiphoton transitions. By proper simple pulse shaping the three-photon absorption in Na is effectively controlled experimentally, enhanced up to $\ensuremath{\sim}300%$ of the absorption induced by the transform-limited pulse. It is achieved by phase manipulating intra- and intergroup interferences involving two groups of three-photon excitation pathways: (i) on resonance and (ii) near resonance with the intermediate resonance state accessed by nonresonant two-photon transition.

Enhancing Intermediate State Absorption of Resonance-Mediated Multiphoton Absorption Process

Chenhui Lu, Yunhua Yao, Shuwu Xu +4 more

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the control of the intermediate state absorption in (1+2) resonance-mediated multiphoton absorption process by shaping the femosecond laser pulse. A theoretical model is proposed to investigate the intermediate state absorption of (1+2) resonance-mediated three-photon absorption process in the molecular system, and an analytical solution is obtained on the basis of time-dependent perturbation theory. Our theoretical results show that the intermediate state absorption can be enhanced by controlling the laser spectral phase due to final state absorption reduction, and this absorption enhancement efficiency increases with the increase of the laser intensity. These theoretical results are experimentally confirmed in IR144 dye by varying the laser spectral phase with a sinusoidal modulation function.

Coherent control of population and pulse propagation beyond the rotating wave approximation

Ji‐Cai Liu, Viviane Costa Felicíssimo, Freddy Fernandes Guimarães +2 more

The dynamics of populations of the vibrational states in a NO molecule (one-photon absorption) and of the electronic states in a 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino) stilbene molecule (two-photon absorption) is studied versus the frequency, intensity and shape of the laser pulse. We show that specially designed infrared laser pulses can build selective populations of certain vibrational states. A detuning of light frequency from the vibrational resonance qualitatively changes the dynamics of populations. It is found out that the populations of the nonresonant levels follow the pulse shape adiabatically if the detuning significantly exceeds the inverse characteristic time of the change of the pulse. Depopulation of the nonresonant vibrational states leads to a high population of the resonant state at the end of the pulse. Complete breakdown of the standard rotating wave approximation for a two-photon absorption process is observed even for a rather small intensity of the laser pulse. An analytical solution for the interaction of a pulse with a three-level system beyond the rotating wave approximation is obtained, and it is in close agreement with the strict numerical solution of the amplitude equations. Special attention is paid to the population dynamics of randomly oriented molecules. The orientational disorder as well as the vibrations limit the coherent population transfer. Calculations show the strong role of the anisotropy of photoexcitation in the coherent control of populations which can affect the anisotropy of photobleaching.

Multichannel Selective Femtosecond Coherent Control Based on Symmetry Properties

Zohar Amitay, Andrey Gandman, Lev Chuntonov +1 more

We present and implement a new scheme for extended multichannel selective femtosecond coherent control based on symmetry properties of the excitation channels. Here, an atomic nonresonant two-photon absorption channel is coherently incorporated in a resonance-mediated (2+1) three-photon absorption channel. By proper pulse shaping, utilizing the invariance of the two-photon absorption to specific phase transformations of the pulse, the three-photon absorption is tuned independently over an order-of-magnitude yield range for any possible two-photon absorption yield. Noticeable is a set of "two-photon dark pulses" inducing widely tunable three-photon absorption.
