Dynamics of quantum tomography in an open system

Abstract

In this study, we provide a way to describe the dynamics of quantum tomography in an open system with a generalized master equation, considering a case where the relevant system under tomographic measurement is influenced by the environment. We apply this to spin tomography because such situations typically occur in μSR (muon spin rotation/relaxation/resonance) experiments where microscopic features of the material are investigated by injecting muons as probes. As a typical example to describe the interaction between muons and a sample material, we use a spin-boson model where the relevant spin interacts with a bosonic environment. We describe the dynamics of a spin tomogram using a time-convolutionless type of generalized master equation that enables us to describe short time scales and/or low-temperature regions. Through numerical evaluation for the case of Ohmic spectral density with an exponential cutoff, a clear interdependency is found between the time evolution of elements of the density operator and a spin tomogram. The formulation in this paper may provide important fundamental information for the analysis of results from, for example, μSR experiments on short time scales and/or in low-temperature regions using spin tomography.

Open Quantum Dynamics Theory of Spin Relaxation: Application to μSR and Low-Field NMR Spectroscopies

Hideaki Takahashi, Yoshitaka Tanimura

An open quantum system is a system coupled to an environment that can describe time-irreversible dynamics through which the system evolves toward the thermal equilibrium state. We present a quantum mechanically rigorous theory in order to help the analysis of spectra obtained from the advanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon spin rotation, relaxation or resonance (μSR) techniques. Our approach is based on the numerically "Exact" hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach, which allows us to study the reduced system dynamics for non-perturbative and non-Markovian system-bath interactions at finite temperature even under strong time-dependent perturbations. We demonstrate the present theory to analyze μSR and low-field NMR spectra, as an extension of the Kubo-Toyabe theory focusing on the effects of temperature and anisotropy of a local magnetic field on spectra, to help further the development of these experimental means.

Indivisible quantum evolution of a driven open spin-SSS system

Hao, Xiang, Xuefen Xu, Xiaoqun Wang

Using a recently proposed measure for divisibility of a dynamical map, we study the non-Markovian character of a quantum evolution of a driven spin-$S$ system weakly coupled to a bosonic bath. The complete tomographic knowledge about the dynamics of the open system is obtained by the time-convolutionless master equation in the secular approximation. The derived equation can be applied to a wide range of spin-boson models with the Hermitian or non-Hermitian coupling operator in the system-environment interaction Hamiltonian. Besides the influence of the environmental spectral densities, the tunneling energy of the system Hamiltonian can affect the measure of quantum non-Markovianity. It is found that the non-Markovian feature of a dynamical map of a high-dimension spin system is noticeable in contrast to that of a low-dimension spin system.

Pseudomode description of general open quantum system dynamics: non-perturbative master equation for the spin-boson model

Graeme Pleasance, Francesco Petruccione

We outline a non-perturbative approach for simulating the behavior of open quantum systems interacting with a bosonic environment defined by a generalized spectral density function. The method is based on replacing the environment by a set of damped harmonic oscillators - the pseudomodes - thereby forming an enlarged open system whose dynamics is governed by a Markovian master equation. Each pseudomode is connected to one of the poles of the spectral density when analytically continued to the lower-half complex frequency plane. Here, we extend previous results to a completely generic class of open system models, and discuss how our framework can be used as a powerful and versatile tool for analyzing non-Markovian open system dynamics. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on the spin-boson model by accurately benchmarking its predictions against numerically exact results.

Dynamics of a quantum interacting system: Extended global approach beyond the Born-Markov and secular approximation

Chikako Uchiyama

In various fields from quantum physics to biology, the open quantum dynamics of a system consisting of interacting subsystems emphasizes its fundamental functionality. The local approach, deriving a dissipator in a master equation by ignoring the inter-subsystem interaction, has been widely used to describe the reduced dynamics due to its robustness to keep the positivity of a density operator. However, one critique is that a stationary state obtained by the approach in the limit of weak system-environment coupling is written in the form of the Gibbs state for the partial Hamiltonian by excluding the inter-subsystem interaction from the total one of the relevant system. As an alternative, the global approach, deriving a dissipator with including the inter-subsystem interaction, under the Born--Markov and secular approximations has attracted much attention, and there is debate concerning its violation of positivity in the short-term region and/or limited parameter region for the Bohr frequencies of the subsystems. In this study, we present a formalism that leads to the time-convolutionless (time-local) master equation obtained by extending the global approach beyond the Born-Markov and secular approximations. We apply it to the excitation energy transfer between interacting sites in which only the terminal site weakly interacts with a bosonic environment of finite temperature in a manner beyond the rotating-wave approximation. We find that the formulation (1) gives the short-time behavior while preserving positivity, (2) shows the oscillatory features that the secular approximation would obscure, and (3) leads to a stationary state very near to the Gibbs state for the total Hamiltonian of the relevant system.

Aspects of Open Quantum System Dynamics

Walter T. Strunz

The interaction of a quantum system with a many degree of freedom environment entails damping and the loss of quantum coherence. In these two lectures we focus on two aspects of open quantum system dynamics. First, we present decoherence as a dynamical phenomenon and determine the corresponding time scales, discuss an experiment and the nature of robust states, and mention universal properties of short-time decoherence of macroscopic superpositions. Secondly, in analogy to the classical description of open systems in terms of Langevin equations, we present a stochastic approach to open quantum system dynamics in terms of a stochastic Schrödinger equation. We give a microscopic derivation that allows us to generalize the stochastic approach to non-Markovian situations. We discuss a convolutionless formulation of our theory and finally, we focus on the quantised version of Brownian motion as an often-employed example.

Tomographic representation of spin and quark states

A. B. Klimov, Olga V Man apos ko, Vladimir I Man ko +2 more

We present a short review of the general principles of constructing tomograms of quantum states. We derive a general tomographic reconstruction formula for the quantum density operator of a system with a dynamical Lie group. In the reconstruction formula, the multiplicity of irreducible representation in Clebsch–Gordan decomposition is taken into account. Various approaches to spin tomography are discussed. An integral representation for the tomographic probability is found and a contraction of the spin tomogram to the photon-number tomography distribution is considered. The case of SU (3) tomography is discussed with the examples of quark states (related to the simplest triplet representations) and octet states.
