Abstract

A Sagnac-type Mach-Zehnder interferometer(SMZI) is a very stable instrument with respect to phase drift because all optical paths can share common optical components. We have observed very stable interference fringes in single photon interference experiments with an extremely attenuated laser beam, and with heralded single photons prepared from polarization correlated photon pairs in type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The phase stability is measured to be about ${\pm}0.18$ rad for the SMZI, in contrast, conventional MZI showed the phase fluctuation of around ${\pm}1.02$ rad.

We have observed a nonclassical effect in a fourth-order interference experiment with the photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion and the Hong-Ou-Handel interferometer. For interfering classical fields with orthogonal polarizations, the visibility can be no larger than 50%, and it depends on the ratio of the two beam intensities. It is found that not only is our observed visibility of 85% well above 50%, but it is also independent of the two beam intensities in coincidence measurements made in a two-photon polarization correlation experiment.

We present experimental observations of two-photon spatial bunching effect in a two-photon interference experiment by using the photon pairs produced by parametric down-conversion and the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. We show that this pairing behavior is observed by coincidence detection, but gives a negligible effect for a single count.

The fourth-order interference between entangled state photon pairs with different frequencies

One of the nonclassical effects in two-photon interference experiments, spatial quantum beating, is observed in fourth-order interference with pairs of photons produced by a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. When photon pairs in different frequencies $\omega1$ and $\omega2$ are mixed together, and directed to two detectors, the coincidence counts exhibit a cosine modulation with difference frequency | $\omega1$ - $\omega2$ |. The measured coincidence counts turned out to have an interference pattern with periodicity of 10.45 ㎛ in position or 34.82fs in time delay, which corresponds to the period 2 $\pi$ /| $\omega1$ - $\omega2$ | for the beat frequency of 0.29 ${\times}10^{14}$ Hz.

Active Phase Compensation in a Fiber-Optical Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

Joakim Argillander

This thesis investigates the phenomena of phase stability in a fiber-optical MZI (Mach-Zehnder Interferometer). The MZI is a key building block of optical systems for use in experiments with both continuous-wave light and with single photons. By splitting incoming light into two beams and allowing it to interfere with itself, an interference pattern is visible at the output, and this phenomena can be used to code information. This is the operating principle in, for example, QKD (Quantum Key Distribution) experiments. This interference requires coherence that is higher than the length difference between the beams that the incoming light is split into. Particularly the phase of the beams must be equal to achieve constructive interference. If one beam is phase-shifted (with respect to the other) due to the light having traversed a longer path, only partially constructive interference is achieved. If the phase shift also varies with time this leads to a system where experiments can no longer reliably be performed. Sources of these fluctuations are thermal, acoustic or mechanical. Fiber-optical interferometers are particularly sensitive to path length fluctuations of the waveguides as the fiber-optic medium contracts and elongates with temperature, and also has a larger surface area for circulating air to mechanically disturb the waveguides than bulk optics interferometers. In this thesis, a solution to environment-induced phase drift is presented by evaluating implementations of feedback algorithms for automatic control. The algorithms PID (Proportional-, Integral-, Derivative controller) and an ICA (IncrementalControl Algorithm) have been investigated and the performance of these controllers has been compared when used with, and without, optical enclosures. The algorithms are implemented in an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) and the controller actuates an electro-optical phase modulator that can add a phase shift to one of the light beams in the MZI. This thesis shows that significant improvement in the optical stability can be achieved with active control compared to an interferometer without active phase control.

Single-photon interference and router-control in an optic fiber Sagnac interferometer

Guang Wu, Chunyuan Zhou, Zeng He-Ping +1 more

A novel scheme to realize stable single-photon interference and router-control is demonstrated in this paper. Phase difference between clockwise and counter-clockwise single-photons is controlled by time-division phase modulation in an optic fiber Sagnac loop. Due to the annular geometric configuration of the Sagnac loop, clockwise and counter-clockwise single-photons travel the same optical path and have the same slowly-varying phase drifts, which are automatically compensated. Furthermore, clockwise and counter-clockwise single-photons encounter the same polarization mode dispersion, which is also automatically compensated at the exit port of the Sagnac interferometer. Long-distance single-mode optic fiber at 1550 nm is used in our experimental realization. Fringe visibility of single-photon interference higher than 98% and fidelity of single-photon router-control higher than 90% have been obtained in a Sagnac fiber loop of 5 km. We also realized a stable single-photon interference in Sagnac fiber loops as long as 27 and 52 km. The corresponding fringe visibilities were higher than 94% and 84%, respectively.

We performed experiments on Hong-Ou-Mandel type two-photon interference with frequency entangled photon pairs at 1.5 ${\mu}m$ telecommunication band generated through femtosecond pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Two different angular frequencies ${\omega}_1$ and ${\omega}_2$ were selected using CWDM(coarse wavelength division multiplexing) filters at the output ports of the interferometer. The coincidence counting rates were measured with varying path-length difference between the two interferometer arms to observe the two-photon interference patterns of spatial beating. The obtained visibilities in the net coincidence were close to the theoretical limit of 100%.
