FINITE-DIMENSIONAL SQUEEZED VACUUM AND ITS GENERATION 1

Abstract

A squeezed vacuum in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space (FDHS) is defined. Its explicit Fock expansion is found. We show that our state goes over into the standard squeezed vacuum if the squeeze parameter squared is much less than the dimension of FDHS. A method to generate finite-dimensional squeezed vacuum is proposed. 1

Quantum-Optical States in Finite-Dimensional Hilbert Space. II. State Generation

W. Leoński, Adam Miranowicz

The authors begin by summarizing some schemes of generating finite-dimensional (FD) quantum-optical states. Although it is possible to generate n-photon Fock states and then to construct a desired state from these states, the focus of the chapter is on generation schemes that lead directly to the FD coherent states and FD squeezed vacuum. The method described is based on the quantum nonlinear oscillator evolution. The oscillator is assumed to be driven by external excitation. Depending on the character of the excitation, various FD states can be produced.

Quantum-Optical States in Finite-Dimensional Hilbert Space. I. General Formalism

Adam Miranowicz, W. Leoński, Nobuyuki Imoto

This chapter presents two essentially different constructions of harmonic oscillator states in a finite-dimensional (FD) Hilbert space. The authors propose some new definitions of the states and find their explicit forms in the Fock representation. For the convenience of the reader, they bring together several known FD quantum-optical states, including FD coherent states, FD phase coherent states, FD displaced number states, FD Schrödinger cats, and FD squeezed vacuums. The discrete Wigner function is applied in order to demonstrate intriguing properties of the various states.

In the second part of our review (for the first part see quant-ph/0108080), we discuss a physical model for generation of "truncated" coherent and squeezed states in finite-dimensional Hibert spaces.

Squeezing Properties of Even Coherent States in a Finite-Dimensional Hilbert Space

Jiu-Yun Zhu, Le‐Man Kuang

Even coherent states (ECSs) of a finite-dimensional Hilbert space harmonic oscillator (FDHSHO) are constructed explicitly. Some properties of them are discussed. The quadrature squeezing and the amplituded-squared squeezing of these states are investigated in detail. It is found that ECSs of the FDHSHO exhibit not only the quadrature squeezing but also the amplituded-squeezing.

Finite-dimensional approximations of generalized squeezing

Sahel Ashhab, Felix Fischer, Davide Lonigro +2 more

We show unexpected behaviour in simulations of generalized squeezing performed with finite-dimensional truncations of the Fock space: even for extremely large dimension of the state space, the results depend on whether the truncation dimension is even or odd. This situation raises the question whether the simulation results are physically meaningful. We demonstrate that, in fact, the two truncation schemes correspond to two well-defined, distinct unitary evolutions whose generators are defined on different subsets of the infinite-dimensional Fock space. This is a consequence of the fact that the generalized squeezing Hamiltonian is not self-adjoint on states with finite excitations, but possesses multiple self-adjoint extensions. Furthermore, we present results on the spectrum of the squeezing Hamiltonians corresponding to even and odd truncation size that elucidate the properties of the two different self-adjoint extensions corresponding to the even and odd truncation scheme. To make the squeezing operator applicable to a physical system, we must regularize it by other terms that depend on the specifics of the experimental implementation. We show that the addition of a Kerr interaction term in the Hamiltonian leads to uniquely converging simulations, with no dependence on the parity of the truncation size, and demonstrate that the Kerr term indeed renders the Hamiltonian self-adjoint and thus physically interpretable.

Coherent States of a Harmonic Oscillator in a Finite-dimensional Hilbert Space and Their Squeezing Properties

Le‐Man Kuang, Fa-Bo Wang, Yan-Guo Zhou

New coherent states of a harmonic oscillator in a finite-dimensional Fock space are introduced. Some properties of these coherent states are discussed. The second-order squeezing of these coherent states with respect to the quadrature operators is studied in detail. In particular, for a two-state system the arbitrary higher-order squeezing of these states is investigated. It is shown that these coherent states exhibit much richer squeezing properties than the coherent states of a usual harmonic oscillator in an infinite-dimensional Fock space. It is found that these coherent states have not only second-order squeezing but also higher-order squeezing with respect to the quadrature operators of the field under consideration.
