Abstract

We construct a quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra B ( L 2 (ℝ + ;ℂ)) of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space L 2 (ℝ + ;ℂ) with the following property: the biggest *-subalgebra of B ( L 2 (ℝ + ;ℂ)) contained in the domain of the infinitesimal generator is not σ-weakly dense. Our semigroup is an extension of a classical Markov semigroup on L ∞ (ℝ + ;ℂ) with the same property. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

Quantum Markov Semigroups

Mou-Hsiung Chang

In this chapter, we define and explore basic properties of a quantum Markov semigroup { I t , t ≥ 0} of linear maps on the C* -algebra or von Neumann algebra A that characterizes the quantum system. The quantum Markov semigroup (QMS) plays a key role in describing quantum Markov processes that are to be explored in the subsequent chapters. The concept of QMS extends the semigroup of probability transition operators { T t , t ≥ 0} for a classical Markov process to its noncommutative counterpart. Suppose the classical Markov process { X t , t ≥ 0} is defined on the complete filtered classical probability space (Ω, Ƒ, P ; {Ƒ t , t ≥ 0}) and with values in a measurable space (핏, B (X)). Recall that for each t ≥ 0, the probability transition operator T t : L ∞ (X, B (X)) → L ∞ (X, B (X)) by ( T t f )( X s ) = E x [ f ( X s + t ) | Ƒ s ] ∀ s , t ≥ 0. A semigroup of linear maps on the C* -algebra or von Neumann algebra A is said to be a quantum dynamical semigroup (QDS) if (i) I 0 = J (the identity operator on A ); (ii) I t I s = I t + s for all t , s ≥ 0; (iii) I t is completely positive for each t ≥ 0; and (iv) I t is σ weakly continuous on A , i.e., a ↦ tr ( ρI t ( a )) is continuous from A to ℂ for each ρ ∈ S ( A ) (the space of quantum states) and for each t ≥ 0. If in addition I t ( I ) = I , (respectively, I t ( I ) ≤ I ) for all t ≥ 0, then the QDS is said to be a quantum Makrov semigroup (QMS) (respectively, quantum sub-Markov semigroup).

The Decoherence-Free Subalgebra of Gaussian Quantum Markov Semigroups

Julián Agredo, Franco Fagnola, Damiano Poletti

Abstract We demonstrate a method for finding the decoherence-free subalgebra $${\mathcal {N}}({\mathcal {T}})$$ N ( T ) of a Gaussian quantum Markov semigroup on the von Neumann algebra $${\mathcal {B}}(\Gamma (\mathbb {C}^d))$$ B ( Γ ( C d ) ) of all bounded operator on the Fock space $$\Gamma (\mathbb {C}^d)$$ Γ ( C d ) on $$\mathbb {C}^d$$ C d . We show that $${\mathcal {N}}({\mathcal {T}})$$ N ( T ) is a type I von Neumann algebra $$L^\infty (\mathbb {R}^{d_c};\mathbb {C}){\overline{\otimes }}{\mathcal {B}}(\Gamma (\mathbb {C}^{d_f}))$$ L ∞ ( R d c ; C ) ⊗ ¯ B ( Γ ( C d f ) ) determined, up to unitary equivalence, by two natural numbers $$d_c,d_f\le d$$ d c , d f ≤ d . This result is illustrated by some applications and examples.

4 GENERATORS OF QUANTUM MARKOV SEMIGROUPS

George Androulakis, Matthew Ziemke

Quantum Markov Semigroups (QMSs) originally arose in the study of the evolutions of irreversible open quantum systems. Mathematically, they are a generalization of classical Markov semigroups where the underlying function space is replaced by a non-commutative operator algebra. In the case when the QMS is uniformly continuous, theorems due to Lindblad \cite{lindblad}, Stinespring \cite{stinespring}, and Kraus \cite{kraus} imply that the generator of the semigroup has the form $$L(A)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}V_n^*AV_n +GA+AG^*$$ where $V_n$ and G are elements of the underlying operator algebra. In the present paper we investigate the form of the generators of QMSs which are not necessarily uniformly continuous and act on the bounded operators of a Hilbert space. We prove that the generators of such semigroups have forms that reflect the results of Lindblad and Stinespring. We also make some progress towards forms reflecting Kraus' result. Lastly we look at several examples to clarify our findings and verify that some of the unbounded operators we are using have dense domains.

Quantum Markov Semigroups and their Stationary States

Franco Fagnola, Rolando Rebolledo

The notion of a Quantum Markov Semigroup (QMS) is an extension of classical Markov semigroups motivated by the study of open quantum systems. Indeed, a number of physicists interested in open quantum systems introduced the notion of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups in the Seventies. Since then the subject has been extensively discussed and improved by both physicists and mathematicians, especially by the founders of Quantum Stochastic Analysis. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

MINIMAL QUANTUM DYNAMICAL SEMIGROUP ON A VON NEUMANN ALGEBRA

Debashish Goswami, Kalyan B. Sinha

Given a formal unbounded generator, the minimal quantum dynamical semigroup on a von Neumann algebra is constructed. A set of equivalent necessary and sufficient conditions for the conservativity of the minimal semigroup is given and in the case when it is not conservative, a distinguished family of conservative perturbations of the semigroup is studied. Finally, some of these results are applied to the classical Markov semigroup with arbitrary state space.

Quantum Markov Processes

Mou-Hsiung Chang

As mentioned previously, a classical Markov semigroup of transition operators { T t , t ≥ 0} can be generated from a classical Markov process { X t , t ≥ 0}. On the other hand, given a Markov semigroup, a Markov process { X t , t ≥ 0} can be constructed based on the Markov semigroup { T t , t ≥ 0} using the Kolmogorov consistency theorem. In the context of quantum probability space ( A , ρ ), a Markov dilation (i.e., construction of a quantum Markov process from a given quantum Markov semigroup of operators { I t , t ≥ 0}) turns out to be a nontrivial matter. This is partly due to the fact that, although the general concept of conditional expectation of an observable given a sub-von Neumann algebras B ⊂ A can be defined and required properties can be described, an explicit construction of such a conditional expectation is still unavailable in general. The main objective of this chapter is to introduce relevant concepts and to develop some properties of quantum Markov processes in the content of quantum probability explored in previous chapters. There are 2 major components in this chapter: (i) introduction of concepts and derivation of properties of a quantum Markov processes based on some assumed and/or derived properties of conditional expectation E ρ [· | A t ] ] given a filtration of sub-von Neumann algebras { A t ] , t ≥ 0} of A , and (ii) Markov dilation or construction of a weak quantum Markov flow (WQMF) from a given quantum Markov semigroup { I t , t ≥ 0} using the weak conditional expectation E [· | F t ], where { F t , t ≥ 0} is a filtration of orthogonal projection operators defined on the complex Hilbert space ℍ. The main objective of the first component is to introduce the relevant concept and develop some properties of quantum Markov processes in the content of quantum probability explored in previous chapters. Although the theory of (classical) Markov processes is well known in the probability community (see, for example, Dynkin [Dyn62], Ethier and Kurtz [EK85]), we outline some basic concept and results from the classical theory of homogeneous Markov processes below for comparison purpose.
