Abstract

It was shown in literatures that every density matrix for a spin- system can be defined in terms of the Fano statistical tensor parameters. On the other hand, this spherical tensor parameters can be uniquely determined by units vectors. In this study, we construct the density matrix for the most general spin-1 system in terms of unit vectors. We also give some cases to show symmetric properties of spherical tensor parameters.

Quantum-state tomography for spin- l systems

Holger Friedrich Hofmann, Shigeki Takeuchi

We show that the density matrix of a spin-$l$ system can be described entirely in terms of the measurement statistics of projective spin measurements along a minimum of $4l+1$ different spin directions. It is thus possible to represent the complete quantum statistics of any $N$-level system within the spherically symmetric three-dimensional space defined by the spin vector. An explicit method for reconstructing the density matrix of a spin-1 system from the measurement statistics of five nonorthogonal spin directions is presented and the generalization to spin-$l$ systems is discussed.

Tensor Representation of Spin States

O. Giraud, Daniel Braun, Dorian Baguette +2 more

We propose a generalization of the Bloch sphere representation for arbitrary spin states. It provides a compact and elegant representation of spin density matrices in terms of tensors that share the most important properties of Bloch vectors. Our representation, based on covariant matrices introduced by Weinberg in the context of quantum field theory, allows for a simple parametrization of coherent spin states, and a straightforward transformation of density matrices under local unitary and partial tracing operations. It enables us to provide a criterion for anticoherence, relevant in a broader context such as quantum polarization of light.

Geometry of density matrices. II. Reduced density matrices and N representability

John E. Harriman

The reduction of density matrices defined with respect to a finite basis set is considered. A basis set can be introduced into the vector space of Hermitian matrices acting on functions of the coordinates of $p$ particles for each value of $p$. An analogy with the construction of spin eigenfunctions is used to obtain a particular basis set called the reducing basis. Reduction of one of these basis elements is either one to one or maps into the origin. Any element in the preimage of a density matrix can thus be resolved into two components, one uniquely determined by the density matrix and the other arbitrary within a certin subset. A restatement of the $N$-representability problem is given, and two sufficient conditions and one necessary condition for $N$ representability are given in terms of distances and norms.

Orbits of the rotation group on the density matrices of spin-1 particles

Michel Daumens, Marcel Perroud

The SO(3) orbits of the spin-one mixed states, contained in each SU(3) orbit are shown to be characterized by the squares (defined by means of a symmetric bilinear form) of the eigenvectors of the density matrices. The orbits of matrices diagonalizable by a rotation in a spherical basis are deduced, and quadrupole matrices are considered as a special case.

Cluster Decomposition and the Spin-Statistics Theorem in S -Matrix Theory

M. Froissart, John R. Taylor

This paper establishes within $S$-matrix theory the connection between spin and statistics; namely, that the multiparticle-state vectors are symmetric or antisymmetric for permutation of identical particles according as the particle concerned has integral or half-integral spin. The proof given, which is simpler than previous $S$-matrix proofs, depends on the cluster-decomposition property, crossing symmetry, and Hermitian analyticity. A considerable part of the paper is concerned with establishing a suitable framework to formulate the first of these properties, cluster decomposition. To this end we develop from first principles the idea of the tensor product $f\ensuremath{\bigotimes}g$ which, for any two state vectors $f$ and $g$, represents the composite state ($f$ and $g$).

A generalized Coulomb problem for a spin-1/2 fermion

V. B. Mendrot, A. S. de Castro, P. Alberto

We study the Dirac equation in 3+1 dimensions with a general combination of scalar, vector and tensor interactions with arbitrary strengths, all of them described by central Coulomb potentials acting on a particular plane of motion. For the tensor coupling a constant term is also included, since this gives rise to an effective Coulomb potential, which is necessary for the formation of bound states in a pure tensor coupling configuration. The exact bound-state solutions for this generalized Coulomb problem are computed by exploiting the freedom in choosing the coefficients of the \textit{Ansätze} for the radial functions, which leads to wave functions in terms of generalized Laguerre polynomials. From the quantization condition, the exact energy spectrum is also determined and its dependence on the parameters of the potentials is discussed. We show that similar features of the equations for the problem in the plane and the spherically symmetric problem allow a simple and direct mapping between them, thereby providing the solution to the spherical Coulomb problem. Our results are validated by showing that the solutions correctly encompass several previous solutions available in the literature for particular cases of this problem, for which we further develop the analysis of the parameters. We also derive two new particular cases not yet reported in the literature: the case of breaking of spin and pseudospin symmetries by the addition of a Coulomb plus constant tensor potential and the problem of a scalar plus tensor Coulomb potentials.
