THE SEARCH FOR COMPETING CHARGE ORDERS IN FRUSTRATED LADDER SYSTEMS

Abstract

A recent study revealed the dynamics of the charge sector of a one-dimensional quarterfilled electronic system with extended Hubbard interactions to be that of an effective pseudospin transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in the strong coupling limit. With the twin motivations of studying the co-existing charge and spin order found in strongly correlated chain systems and the effects of inter-chain couplings, we investigate the phase diagram of coupled effective (TFIM) systems. A bosonisation and RG analysis for a two-leg TFIM ladder yields a rich phase diagram showing Wigner/Peierls charge order and Neel/dimer spin order. In a broad parameter regime, the orbital antiferromagnetic phase is found to be stable. An intermediate gapless phase of finite width is found to lie in between two charge-ordered gapped phases. Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are found to lead from the gapless phase to either of the charge-ordered phases. Low energy effective Hamiltonian analyses of a strongly coupled 2-chain ladder system confirm a phase diagram with in-chain CO, rung-dimer, and orbital antiferromagnetic ordered phases with varying interchain couplings as well as superconductivity upon hole-doping. Our work is potentially relevant for a unified description of a class of strongly correlated, quarter-filled chain and ladder systems.

By following the ideas of Emery and Noguera, a recent study revealed the dynamics of the charge sector of a one-dimensional quarter-filled electronic system with extended Hubbard interactions to be that of an effective pseudospin transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in the strong-coupling limit. With the twin motivations of studying the co-existing charge and spin order found in strongly correlated chain systems and the effects of interchain couplings, we investigate the phase diagram of coupled effective (TFIM) systems. A bosonization and renormalization group (RG) analysis for a two-leg TFIM ladder yields a rich phase diagram showing Wigner/Peierls charge order and Néel/dimer spin order. A detailed analysis is also carried out for the dimensional crossover physics when many such pseudospin systems are coupled to one another. Importantly, the analysis reveals the key role of critical quantum fluctuations in driving the strong dispersion in the transverse directions, as well as a T = 0 deconfinement transition. Our work is potentially relevant for a unified description of a class of strongly correlated, quarter-filled chain and ladder systems.

Phase diagram of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder

Matthias Vojta C, A. Hübsch, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the quarter-filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V$ using the density matrix renormalization-group technique. The ground state is homogeneous at small $V,$ a ``checkerboard'' charge-ordered insulator at large $V$ and not too small on site Coulomb repulsion U, and is phase separated for moderate or large $V$ and small U. The zero-temperature transition between the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phase is found to be second order. In both the homogeneous and the charge-ordered phases the existence of a spin gap mainly depends on the ratio of interchain to intrachain hopping. In the second part of the paper we construct an effective Hamiltonian for the spin degrees of freedom in the strong-coupling, charge-ordered regime that maps the system onto a frustrated spin chain. The opening of a spin gap is thus connected with spontaneous dimerization.

Competition of magnetic and superconducting ordering in one-dimensional generalized Hubbard models

C. Dziurzik

In the present work the numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm is used to analyze the ground state properties of the Hubbard model with transverse spin-exchange. The DMRG algorithm, which was developed by White in 1992, is based on the following simple but effective concept: the ground-state wavefunction as well as the low energy excitations of a large interacting chain are obtained by increasing the lattice size iteratively, starting with a small one that can be diagonalized exactly. The exponentially growing Hilbert space is controlled by a renormalization procedure in which 'less important' degrees of freedom are integrated out. Motivated by recent experimental findings showing evidence for the competition or even coexistence of triplet superconductivity and ferromagnetism we focused our investigations on a rather simple extension of the Hubbard model including transverse spin exchange between electrons on nearest-neighbour sites. In the half-filled case, we showed that the phase diagram obtained in the weak-coupling limit has to be modified. A new phase, described by spin and charge excitation gap, shows long-range order in the longitudinal spin correlation, whereas superconducting correlations are surpressed and decay exponentially as expected for the case of a finite charge gap. In general, the presence of a repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction U leads to an enlargement of the sectors with nonvanishing charge gap at the expense of the sectors with spin gap. We extend our analysis to the case of a quarter-filled band. Depending on the value J/t the model belongs either to a gapless excitation phase or to a spin gapped phase with gapless charge degrees of freedom.

Plaquette order in a dimerized frustrated spin ladder

Ofer Shlagman, Efrat Shimshoni

We study the effect of dimerization (due to, e.g., spin-Peierls instability) on the phase diagram of a frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder, with weak transverse and diagonal rung coupling. Our analysis focuses on a one-dimensional version of the model (i.e., a single two-leg ladder) where we consider two forms of dimerization on the legs: columnar dimers (CDs) and staggered dimers (SDs). We examine in particular the regime of parameters (corresponding to an intermediate $XXZ$ anisotropy) in which the leg dimerization and the rung coupling terms are equally relevant. In both the CD and SD cases, we find that the effective field theory describing the system is a self-dual sine-Gordon model, which favors ordering and the opening of a gap to excitations. The order parameter, which reflects the interplay between the leg and rung dimerization interactions, represents a crystal of 4-spin plaquettes on which longitudinal and transverse dimers are in a coherent superposition. Depending on the leg dimerization mode, these plaquettes are closed or open, however both types spontaneously break reflection symmetry across the ladder. The closed plaquettes are stable, while the open plaquette order is relatively fragile and the corresponding gap may be tuned to zero under extreme conditions. We further find that a first-order transition occurs from the plaquette order to a valence bond crystal (VBC) of dimers on the legs. This suggests that in a higher-dimensional version of this system, this variety of distinct VBC states with comparable energies leads to the formation of domains. Effectively one-dimensional gapless spinon modes on domain boundaries may account for the experimental observation of spin-liquid behavior in a physical realization of the model.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin- 1 2 frustrated XXZ ladder

Takuhiro Ogino, Ryui Kaneko, Satoshi Morita +1 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ frustrated XXZ ladder, in which two antiferromagnetic chains are coupled by competing rung and diagonal interactions, ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$. Previous studies on the isotropic model have revealed that a fluctuation-induced effective dimer attraction between the legs stabilizes the columnar dimer (CD) phase in the highly frustrated regime ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}2{J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$, especially for ferromagnetic ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}<0$. By means of effective field theory and numerical analyses, we extend this analysis to the XXZ model, and we obtain a rich phase diagram. The diagram includes four gapped featureless phases with no symmetry breaking: the rung singlet (RS) and Haldane phases as well as their twisted variants, the RS* and Haldane* phases, which are all distinct in the presence of certain symmetries. Significantly, the Haldane-CD transition point in the isotropic model turns out to be a crossing point of two transition lines in the XXZ model, and the stripe N\'eel and RS* phases appear between these lines. This indicates a nontrivial interplay between the effective dimer attraction and the exchange anisotropy. In the easy-plane regime, the four featureless phases and two critical phases are found to compete in a complex manner depending on the signs of ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$.
