Abstract

In this paper we examine the absorption and dispersion properties of a weak probe field via Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in a four-level system. It is shown that under certain condition, using this model, the absorption cancellation is appeared and the medium becomes transparent to the weak probe field. It will be shown that the controlling of absorption and dispersion spectrum depends on some atomic parameters. The effects of quantum interference on the absorption and dispersion spectrum are also investigated

Absorption properties of a weak probe field in a four-level atomic medium

We study the absorption properties of a weak probe field in a four-level atomic system. By employing a strong driving field, we investigate the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in this system. We show that, in certain condition, the absorption peak vanishes and the medium become transparent to the weak probe field.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Planar Optical Waveguide

Mariam Mohammad Nasser Tohari, Ali A. Kamli

Atomic coherence is induced in the multilevel atomic system via strong control field that alters the response of medium to a weak probe laser field. This involves quantum interference in the amplitudes of optical transitions and causes the cancellation of absorption, i.e., electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Electromagnetically induced transparency is investigated inside a planar optical waveguide. The eigenvalue equation for the waveguide is solved and used to explore various EIT effects. We show how EIT depends on the incidence angle and allowed mode order of the waveguide and on position of EIT atom inside the structure.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Window in the System of Four-level Configuration

Wu Han-Hua

The absorption and dispersion properties of an N-type four-level system with Doppler(broadening) effect were investigated. In this system we considered two coherent fields and a probe field. When the second coherent field is absent, this system is a single three-level configuration, and the absorption line is just one clear electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) window. While the second coherent field exists, there are two EIT windows which become wide and deep with the(coherent) intensity increasing. The position width and absorbance of the transparency windows can be manipulated by adjusting the detuning of the driving field. In addition,we also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be reduced.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in Y-type system

Kalan Mal, Khairul Islam, Suman Mondal +2 more

The propagation of a probe field through a four-level Y-type atomic system is described in the presence of two additional coherent radiation fields, namely, the control field and the coupling field. An expression for the probe response is derived analytically from the optical Bloch equations under steady state condition to study the absorptive properties of the system under probe field propagation through an ensemble of stationary atoms as well as in a Doppler broadened atomic vapor medium. The most striking result is the conversion of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) into electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) as we start switching from weak probe regime to strong probe regime. The dependence of this conversion on residual Doppler averaging due to wavelength mismatch is also shown by choosing the coupling transition as a Rydberg transition.

Phase control of electromagnetically induced transparency in a four-level system

Lijun Yang, Min Zhao, Dongqi Lv

We present a theoretical study on the frequency position and the linetype of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) in a four-level atomic system with a coupling field, two microwave fields and a probe field. The absorption spectrum which is characterized by two EIT windows is obtained by a weak probe field scanning corresponding transition. It can be found that the frequency position and the linetype of EIT change with the relative phase of the two microwave fields. The frequnecy interval reaches the minimum when the relative phase is reverse. If two microwave fields have the same strength and reverse phase, the absorption spectrum will exhibit an EIT. This proposes a way to controlling frequency position of EIT by modulating the relative phase between two fields.

Multiple Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Four-Level Atomic System

Xiangyang Zhang

Using matrix theory, the absorption and dispersion properties of a lamda-type four-level system driven by two coherent fields are investigated. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the intensity of Rabi frequencies of the coherent field in the steady state, double or single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) can appear explicitly in this system. And the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states. In the double electromagnetically induced transparency, the location of transparent windows can be manipulated by controlling the detuning of the driving field.Additionally,it is also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be enhanced.
