Nonlinear Effects in Quantum Dynamics of Atom Laser: Mean-Field Approach

Abstract

Quantum dynamics and statistics of an atom laser with nonlinear binary interactions are investigated in the framework of mean-field approximation. The linearized effective Hamiltonian of the system is accurately solvable. It is shown that, although the input radio frequency field is in an ordinary Glauber coherent state, the output matter wave will periodically exhibit quadrature squeezing effects purely originated from the nonlinear atom-atom collisions.

Squeezing effects of an atom laser: Beyond the linear model

Hui Jing, Jing-Ling Chen, Mo‐Lin Ge

We investigate the quantum dynamics and statistics of an atom laser by taking into account binary atom-atom collisions. The rotating wave approximation Hamiltonian of the system is solved analytically. We show that the nonlinear atom-atom interactions could yield periodic quadrature squeezing effects in the atom laser output beam, although the input radio frequency field is in a Glauber coherent state.

Generalized Two-State Theory for an Atom Laser with Nonlinear Couplings

Jing Hui, Li-Jun Tian

We present a generalized two-state theory to investigate the quantum dynamics and statistics of an atom laser with nonlinear couplings. The rotating wave approximate Hamiltonian of the system is proved to be analytically solvable. The fraction of output atoms is then showed to exhibit an interesting collapse and revival phenomenon with respect to the evolution time, a sign of nonlinear couplings. Several nonclassical effects, such as sub-Poissonian distribution, quadrature squeezing effects, second-order cross-correlation and accompanied violation of Cauchy-Schwartz inequality are also revealed for the output matter wave. The initial global phase of the trapped condensate, in weak nonlinear coupling limits, is found to exert an interesting impact on the quantum statistical properties of the propagating atom laser beam.

Quantum Dynamical Theory for Squeezed Atom Laser

Jing Hui, Yi-ang Han, Jing‐Ling Chen +1 more

A model for the squeezed output coupler of the trapped Bose-Einstein condensed atoms is established with a simple many-boson system of two states with linear coupling, by preparing an initially squeezed light field. In the Bogoliubov approximation, its solutions show that the quadrature squeezing effect mutually oscillates between the coupling light field and the output atomic field. This manifests that the initially squeezed light will transform into a coherent state after some period of coupling interaction while the output atomic field is in a squeezed state.

Nonlinear atomic Fabry-Perot interferometer: From the mean-field theory to theatom blockadeeffect

Iacopo Carusotto

We have investigated nonlinear atom optical effects which arise from atom-atom collisional interactions in a single-mode atomic Fabry-Perot cavity driven by a coherent cw atom laser beam. When the nonlinear interaction energy per single atom is small, the exact numerical solution of the master equation is well reproduced by a mean-field treatment in which quantum fluctuations are included linearizing the stochastic equations of the Positive-P representation. On the other hand, when the damping of the cavity mode is very weak and its wave-function is tightly confined in space, a regime of strong nonlinearity can be achieved. For the specific case of an incident atom laser frequency at resonance with the empty cavity, the numerical calculations predict a sort of atom blockade effect, which is a sort of atom optical analog of the well-known Coulomb blockade effect of electronic transport through microscopic structures: only one atom can occupy the cavity mode at a time and the statistical properties of the transmitted beam, being very similar to the resonance fluorescence from a single two-level system, show definitely nonclassical behaviors such as antibunching. Only at very large incident intensities, more than one atom can be simultaneously forced inside the cavity mode: in this regime, the results of the numerical calculations can be successfully interpreted using a dressed cavity model. From the formal analogy between atomic matter waves and optical light waves in nonlinear media, it follows that the same results hold for photonic systems.

Quantum-dynamical theory for squeezing the output of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Hui Jing, Jing‐Ling Chen, Mo‐Lin Ge

A linear quantum dynamical theory for squeezing the output of the trapped Bose-Einstein condensate is presented with the Bogoliubov approximation. We observe that the nonclassical properties, such as sub-Poisson distribution and quadrature squeezing effect, mutually oscillate between the quantum states of the applied optical field and the resulting atom laser beam with time. In particular, it is shown that an initially squeezed optical field will lead to squeezing in the outcoupled atomic beam at later times.
