Abstract

Quantum communication requires that photon-pair entanglement be preserved as the photons are distributed to remote locations. We model the effects of loss and birefringence on polarization-entangled photon pairs propagating in optical fibers.

Impact of polarization dependent loss on the propagation of entangled photons over fiber optic links

Brian T. Kirby, Michael Brodsky

Quantum network functionalities rely on the distribution of entangled photons to remote nodes interconnected by optical fibers. Polarization dependent loss (PDL) could potentially impair transmissions of entangled photon pairs. We propose a compact model that accounts for the deleterious effect of PDL of any orientation.

Polarization dependent loss in optical fibers - does it help or ruin photon entanglement distribution?

We experimentally investigate propagation of polarization-entangled photon pairs through two fibers with PDL. We compensate the effect of PDL in one fiber by properly aligning the second fiber's aggregate PDL. A theory supports our observations.

Interplay of residual fiber birefringence and modal loss impairs propagation of polarization entangled photons in fibers. We introduce an illustrative Stokes space model of the effect, verify it experimentally, and demonstrate a simple compensating scheme.

Loss of Polarization Entanglement in Optical Fibers due to Polarization Mode Dispersion

We perform quantum tomography measurements on polarization-entangled photon pairs traversing fibers with birefringence. We find that the entanglement disappears gradually if the birefringence affects only one photon of the pair. A theory supports our observations.
