Quantum-electrodynamic effects for atoms in a laser field

Abstract

Quantum-electrodynamic radiation corrections to atomic energy levels in the presence of monochromatic laser field are considered as radiation shifts of quasienergies. General expressions are obtained for self-energy part of radiation shifts for an arbitrary multilevel atomic system. As an appendix, the radiation shifts of spectral lines of atomic resonance transitions are investigated.

Two-photon magneto-optical effects in atomic gases in resonant laser and strong magnetic fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Alexander I. Karagodov, Andrey A. Eliseev

The theory of interaction of intense bichromatic field of laser radiation with multilevel atomic system in the external magnetic field is considered. The magnitudes of interaction are much larger than the width of atomic levels. The vector-potential of radiation field consisting of two monochromatic components with the frequencies resonant to adjacent transitions is taken in electric dipole approximation. The eigenvalues and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian, including spin-orbit interaction and interactions with laser radiation and external magnetic fields, are found without perturbation theory using resonant approximation. When the effects of resonantly excited radiation are considered the Hamiltonian of interaction with the weak field of scattered radiation is included also. Its eigenfunctions are found with the help of perturbation theory. We consider tow types of effects: polarization effects and effects of resonantly excited radiation. As the atomic system is multilevel we use the numerical methods. The influence of the magnetic field on coherent population trapping effect for multilevel systems is considered. Some of our theoretical results coincide with known experimental ones.

Computer simulations on resonant fluorescence spectra in atomic gases in two monochromatic laser fields of arbitrary intensity and magnetic field

T. Ya. Karagodova

In the intense radiation fields with power density from 104W/cm2 to 109W/cm2 the essential modification of electronic states of atoms occurs displaying, in particular, in modifications of resonant fluorescence (rf) spectra. We use 'Fermi golden rule' for calculations of relative intensities and frequencies for rf multiplet for real multilevel initially unexcited atoms in two monochromatic laser fields of arbitrary intensity resonant to adjacent transitions of (Xi) or (Lambda) types and magnetic field, giving the level splittings of different values from Zeeman to Paschen-Back effect. The dependence of quasienergies on parameters obtained with the help of a sorting program permits us to define the values of parameters for which the states of the system are mixed and so to receive the correct probability amplitudes for instantaneous or adiabatic regimes of switching the perturbation. The analysis of the quasienergies and form of rf spectra permits us to get relations between the form of the spectra and modifications of electronic structure of the atom due to radiation fields and external magnetic field.

Simple atomic systems in resonant laser fields

Mikhail L. Ter-Mikhaelyan

The interaction of simple, two- and three-level atomic systems with monochromatic and nonmonochromatic laser radiation near resonance transitions is discussed based on the Schroedinger equation with radiation decay and no collisional relaxation, outside the framework of the usual perturbation theory. The mathematical schemes employed include the resonance approximation, exact methods, the quasi-energy method, the adiabatic approximation, etc. A large number of physical phenomena, such as oscillating and inverted populations, self-induced resonances, processes of first order in the weak field, Raman scattering, coherent population transfer, etc. are considered. The review is intended for a broad readership.

Atomic level shifts and transition amplitudes in incoming radiation fields

S.C. Yeh, P. Stehle

Expressions for energy-level shifts and transition amplitudes of atoms interacting with an incoming radiation field are developed in a completely quantum theoretic way and the results are compared with others. The continued-fraction expressions reproduce both those of Swain and of Gontier et al., and the numerical results for the particular case of Bloch-Siegert shifts in mercury vapor agree with Stenholm's but go further in giving the shape of the resonances. These results are also obtained by a method of direct diagonalization of the Hamiltonian of the coupled system.

Interaction of an atom subject to an intense laser field with its own radiation field and nonlocality of electromagnetic interaction

R. Kh. Gainutdinov, Aigul A. Mutygullina

We discuss the interaction of an atom subject to an intense driving laser field with its own radiation field. In contrast to the states of bare atoms, the energy difference between some dressed states with the same total angular momentum, its projection and parity may be very small. The self-interaction of a combined atom–laser system associated with nonradiative transitions between such states is effectively strong. We show that the contribution to the radiative shift of the sidebands of the Mollow spectrum, which comes from such processes, is very significant and may be much larger than the trivial Lamb shift, which is the simple redistribution of the Lamb shifts of the corresponding bare states. In the final part, we discuss the possibility that in the Mollow spectrum nonlocality of electromagnetic interaction, which in other cases is hidden in the regularization and renormalization procedures, can manifest itself explicitly.

QED theory of radiation emission and absorption lines for atoms in a strong laser field

Alexander V. Glushkov, Andrey V. Loboda, Elena P. Gurnitskaya +1 more

The consistent approach to the ‘atom–realistic laser field’ interaction is presented, which is based on the quantum electrodynamics (QED) and the Gell–Mann and Low S -matrix formalism. . The method is applied for studying the multi-photon resonance width and shift in the atoms of H and Cs in a laser pulse.
