The Linear Transverse Ising Model with Four‐Spin Interactions

Abstract

Abstract A systematic approximant expansion due to Suzuki is applied to a simple quantum spin system; namely the linear transverse Ising model with four‐spin interactions (lattice coupling) described by the Hamiltonian . The free energy per spin and specific heat of this quantum model is calculated for the first three approximants to the partition function, and the results are discussed within the framework of the findings of other authors.

Monte Carlo method for the Ising model in a transverse field

Rick J. Creswick, Horácio A. Farach, James M. Knight +1 more

The partition function for the Ising model in a transverse field can be expressed as a sum over the usual Ising states by evaluation of the diagonal matrix elements between Ising states with the use of the cumulant expansion. The cumulant sum is evaluated to all orders in \ensuremath{\beta} and second order in \ensuremath{\Gamma}, the transverse field. The effective Hamiltonian is then employed in Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate the average energy and magnetization in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Comparison with exact results on a one-dimensional chain shows that the method works quite well. Monte Carlo results for the average energy, specific heat, and the transverse and longitudinal components of the magnetization for the transverse Ising model on the simple cubic lattice are presented.

The Theoretical Calculation of the Properties of Transverse Ising Model

Tian Li-zhen

The magnetic properties of the transverse Ising model with coordination number 6 (simple cubic lattice) and 4 (square lattice) are studied by using Bethe-Peierls approximation. For different transverse fields, the quantities of the two systems, such as the free energy, transverse and longitudinal magnetizations, internal energy and the magnetic specific heat, and so on, are calculated. It is found that the transverse field influences the quantities of the system very much and has the inhibiting effect on the spontaneous magnetization.

One-Dimensional Ising Model with General Spin

Takeshi Obakata, Takehiko Oguchi

The one-dimensional Ising model is investigated by generalizing the Bethe approximation, which, in this case, gives exact solutions. The energy, specific heat and the zero field susceptibility for S =1, 3/2 and 2 except the susceptibility for S =2 are calculated exactly and compared with the results of Suzuki et al. . As a direct application of this method, the special lattice called the Bethe lattice is treated, and the Curie temperature of the lattice for S =1 is obtained. This method is also applied to solve the one-dimensional Ising model with the second neighbor interactions as well as the first neighbor ones, and the energy and specific heat for S =1/2 are calculated.

AB INITIO TREATMENTS OF THE ISING MODEL IN A TRANSVERSE FIELD

R. F. Bishop, DAMIAN J. J. FARNELL, MANFRED L. RISTIG

In this article new results are presented for the zero-temperature ground-state properties of the spin-half transverse Ising model on various lattices using three different approximate techniques. These are, respectively, the coupled cluster method, the correlated basis function method, and the variational quantum Monte Carlo method. The methods, at different levels of approximation, are used to study the ground-state properties of these systems, and the results are found to be in excellent agreement both with each other and with results of exact calculations for the linear chain and results of exact cumulant series expansions for lattices of higher spatial dimension. The different techniques used are compared and contrasted in the light of these results, and the constructions of the approximate ground- state wave functions are especially discussed.

Statistical Mechanics of the Finite Ising Model with Higher Spin

Chikao Kawabata, Masuo Suzuki

The partition functions of the finite Ising models of spin S =1, 3/2, 2, 5/2 and 3 have been calculated by a high speed computer. The periodicity condition at the boundaries has been imposed, and only the nearest neighbor interaction has been assumed. The specific heats of these finite systems have been calculated as a function of temperature. The maxima of the specific heat increase proportionally to long N in the two-dimensional Ising model with spin S =1, N being the number of lattice points, which indicates that the specific heat for the above lattice has a singularity such as C v / k ∼ A log | T - T c |+ B ± : A ∼0.10 and B - - B + =0.24. The difference ( B + - B - ) has been estimated from the asymmetric distribution of the zeros of the partition function in the complex temperature plane.

First-Order Transition in a Quantum Ising Model with p -Spin Interactions and a Random Field

Yu‐qiang Ma, Z.D. Wang, Li Sheng +2 more

We study a quantum transverse Ising model with p -spin interactions in the presence of a random field. The formulation for the free energy of the system is derived by making use of the Suzuki–Trotter approach with the thermodynamic perturbation theory, and the first-order transitions are obtained in the limit p → ∞ .
