p-WAVE PAIRING IN FERMI SYSTEMS WITH UNEQUAL POPULATION NEAR FESHBACH RESONANCE

Abstract

We explore p-wave pairing in a single-channel two-component Fermi system with unequal population near Feshbach resonance. Our analytical and numerical study reveal a rich superfluid (SF) ground state structure as a function of imbalance. In addition to the state Δ±1 ∝ Y1±1, a multitude of “mixed” SF states formed of linear combinations of Y1m's give global energy minimum under a phase stability condition; these states exhibit variation in energy with the relative phase between the constituent gap amplitudes. States with local energy minimum are also obtained. We provide a geometric representation of the states. A T = 0 polarization vs. p-wave coupling phase diagram is constructed across the BEC-BCS regimes. With increased polarization, the global minimum SF state may undergo a quantum phase transition to the local minimum SF state.

p -wave pairing in a two-component Fermi system with unequal population: Weak-coupling BCS to strong-coupling BEC regimes

Renyuan Liao, Florentin Popescu, Khandker Quader

We study $p$-wave pairing in a two-component Fermi system with unequal population across weak-coupling BCS to strong-coupling BEC regimes. We find a rich ${m}_{s}=0$ spin triplet $p$-wave superfluid (SF) ground state (GS) structure as a function of population imbalance. Under a phase stability condition, the ``global'' energy minimum is given by a multitude of ``mixed'' SF states formed of linear combinations of $m=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1,0$ substates of the $\ensuremath{\ell}=1$ orbital angular momentum state. Except for the ``pure'' SF states ($\ensuremath{\ell}=1,m=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$), other states exhibit oscillation in energy with the relative phase between the constituent gap amplitudes. We also find states with ``local'' energy minimum that can be stable at higher polarizations, suggesting a quantum phase transition between the ``global'' and ``local'' minima phases driven by polarization. We relate the local and global minimum states to Morse and non-Morse critical points. We calculate the variations of the ground state energy with a relative phase angle, coupling, and polarization, and discuss possible consequences for experiments.

Phase diagram of asymmetric Fermi gas across Feshbach resonance

C-H Pao, S-K Yip

We study the phase diagram of the dilute two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature as a function of the polarization and coupling strength. We map out the detailed phase separations between superfluid and normal states near the Feshbach resonance. We show that there are three different coexistence of superfluid and normal phases corresponding to phase separated states between: (I) the partially polarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal phases, (II) the unpolarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal phases and (III) the unpolarized superfluid and the partially polarized normal phases from strong-coupling BEC side to weak-coupling BCS side. For pairing between two species, we found this phase separation regime gets wider and moves toward the BEC side for the majority species are heavier but shifts to BCS side and becomes narrow if they are lighter.

Phase diagram for the trapped p -wave fermionic superfluid with population imbalance

Ammar A. Kirmani, Khandker Quader, Maxim Dzero

We consider the problem of spin-triplet $p$-wave superfluid pairing with total spin projection ${m}_{s}=0$ in atomic Fermi gas across the Feshbach resonance. We allow for imbalanced populations and take into account the effects due to the presence of a harmonic trapping potential. Within the mean-field approximation for the one- and two-channel pairing models we show that the $p$-wave superfluid state has the lowest energy up to some distance from the trap center, the distance depending on population imbalance and the side of the Feshbach resonance (BCS or BEC) the system is in. Beyond this, the system is in the normal state. Since the system, even in the presence of the harmonic trap, is invariant under O(3) space rotation, the superfluid cores which emerge in the trap are comprised of states that are degenerate with respect to the ``orbital ferromagnet'' state, ${p}_{x}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}i{p}_{y}$, as well as the ones in which all angular momentum components of the order parameter are nonzero, provided the modulus of the order parameter maintains a fixed magnitude.

PAIRING IN ASYMMETRICAL FERMI SYSTEMS

Khandker Quader, Renyuan Liao

We consider inter- and intra-species pairing interactions in an asymmetrical Fermi system. Using equation of motion method, we obtain coupled mean-field equations for superfluid gap functions and population densities. We construct a phase diagram across BCS-BEC regimes. Due to intra-species correlations, the BCS singlet superfluid state can sustain finite polarizations, P. For larger P, we find phase separations in BCS and BEC regimes. A superfluid phase exists for all P deep in BEC regime. Our results may apply to pairing in ultracold fermions, nuclear and quark matter physics.

BEC-BCS crossover, phase transitions and phase separation in polarized resonantly-paired superfluids

Daniel E. Sheehy, Leo Radzihovsky

We study resonantly-paired s-wave superfluidity in a degenerate gas of two species (hyperfine states labeled by ↑, ↓) of fermionic atoms when the numbers N↑ and N↓ of the two species are unequal, i.e., the system is "polarized." We find that the continuous crossover from the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) limit of tightly-bound diatomic molecules to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit of weakly correlated Cooper pairs, studied extensively at equal populations, is interrupted by a variety of distinct phenomena under an imposed population difference ΔN ≡ N↑ - N↓. Our findings are summarized by a "polarization" (ΔN) versus Feshbach-resonance detuning (δ) zero-temperature phase diagram, which exhibits regions of phase separation, a periodic FFLO superfluid, a polarized normal Fermi gas and a polarized molecular superfluid consisting of a molecular condensate and a fully polarized Fermi gas. We describe numerous experimental signatures of such phases and the transitions between them, in particular focusing on their spatial structure in the inhomogeneous environment of an atomic trap. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Stability conditions and phase diagrams for two-component Fermi gases with population imbalance

Qijin Chen, Yan He, Chih-Chun Chien +1 more

Superfluidity in atomic Fermi gases with population imbalance has recently become an exciting research focus. There is considerable disagreement in the literature about the appropriate stability conditions for states in the phase diagram throughout the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation crossover. Here we discuss these stability conditions for homogeneous polarized superfluid phases, and compare with recent alternative proposals. The requirement of a positive second-order partial derivative of the thermodynamic potential with respect to the fermionic excitation gap $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ (at fixed chemical potentials) is demonstrated to be equivalent to the positive definiteness of the particle number susceptibility matrix. In addition, we show the positivity of the effective pair mass constitutes another nontrivial stability condition. These conditions determine the (local) stability of the system towards phase separation (or other ordered phases). We also study systematically the effects of finite temperature and the related pseudogap on the phase diagrams defined by our stability conditions.
