Abstract

A new approach is proposed to solve the quantum evolution problem for a system with an arbitrary number of coupled optical parametric processes. Our method is based on the canonical transformations which define the evolution of the system in the Heisenberg picture. This theory overcomes the difficulties arising in the Wei–Norman method. The application of the approach developed is illustrated with the example of generation of a three-mode entangled light field.

Canonical transformations and multipartite coupled parametric processes

Timur Tlyachev, Alexander Mikhailovich Chebotarev, A. S. Chirkin

A general approach is considered to find wave function and density operator evolution of the systems including the arbitrary number of coupled optical parametric interactions described by the quadratic Hamiltonian. This approach is based on the time-dependent canonical transformations that define the evolution of the system in the Heisenberg picture or in the interaction picture. An application is illustrated with four-frequency entangled light fields, which can be produced at the nonlinear optical interactions in vapors and solid states. The process includes one non-degenerate parametric down-conversion followed by two parametric up-conversions occurring in the field of the same classical pumping wave.

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion in waveguides: A backward Heisenberg picture approach

Zhenshan S. Yang, Marco Liscidini, John E. Sipe

We develop a fully quantum-mechanical approach for the description of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in waveguides. Our method allows us to write an expression for the quantum state easily and directly, even when multiple photon pairs are generated in the process. The role of material dispersion in the normalization of the modes of the system, usually neglected, is properly treated here. The example of an ${\text{Al}}_{y}{\text{O}}_{x}/{\text{Al}}_{0.5}{\text{Ga}}_{0.5}\text{As}$ ridge waveguide is discussed to illustrate the application of the formalism.

Multipartite entangled quantum states in coupled optical parametric interactions: Density matrix and entropy characterization

A. S. Chirkin, M. Yu. Saygin, Timur Tlyachev +1 more

We describe the normal ordering method (NOM) as a convinient way to obtaining explicit forms of the state vectors and density matrices of quantum states, usually generated in multiple coupled parametric optical processes. As a specific example, our method is demonstrated for the states, generated in three second-order parametric optical processes - one parametric down-conversion accompanied by two up-conversion processes. The application of the method allowed us to calculate the entropic characteristics of the multipartite quantum system.

Three-Mode Entangled States of the Field in the Process of Nondegenerate Parametric Decay in an Optical Resonator

S. T. Gevorgyan, M. S. Gevorgyan

For the process of non-degenerate parametric decay in an optical resonator, in which a quantum with energy $$\hbar {{{{\omega }}}_{3}}$$ decays into two quanta with energies $$\hbar {{{{\omega }}}_{2}}$$ and $$\hbar {{{{\omega }}}_{1}}$$ , where $$\hbar {{{{\omega }}}_{3}} = \hbar {{{{\omega }}}_{2}} + \hbar {{{{\omega }}}_{1}}$$ is the possibility of forming entangled states of the field by variables of the number of photons between interacting modes of the optical system is investigated. For this purpose, we investigated the dynamics of normalized correlation functions of fluctuations of the number of photons of interacting modes using a Monte–Carlo method. It is shown that in the stationary interaction limit, the value of these correlation functions strongly depends on the value of the coupling coefficient between the modes. It is shown that strong entanglement of the state of three interacting field modes is obtained in the case of weak coupling between the modes. In the case of extreme coupling between them, the value of the correlation function of fluctuations of the number of photons of the field modes tends to unity, because of which entanglement between the states of the modes disappears.

Exact solution for a class of quantum models of interacting bosons

V. S. Shchesnovich

Abstract Quantum models of interacting bosons have a wide range of applications, including the propagation of optical modes in nonlinear media, such as the k-photon down-conversion. Many of these models are related to nonlinear deformations of finite group algebras and, in this sense, are exactly solvable. While advanced group-theoretic methods were developed to study the eigenvalue spectrum, in quantum optics, the primary focus is not on the spectrum of the Hamiltonian but rather on the evolution of an initial state—such as the generation of optical signal modes by a strong pump mode propagating through a nonlinear medium. I propose a simple and general method to solve the state evolution problem, applicable to a broad class of quantum models of interacting bosons. For the k-photon down-conversion model and its generalizations, the solution to the state evolution problem is expressed as an infinite series expansion in powers of the propagation time, with coefficients determined by a recursion relation involving only a single polynomial function. This polynomial function is unique to each nonlinear model. As an application, I compare the exact solution of the parametric down-conversion process with the semiclassical parametric approximation.

Quantum transformation limits in multiwave parametric interactions

M. Yu. Saygin

Abstract The possibility to realize multiple nonlinear optical processes in a single crystal as means to produce multicolor quantum states favours stability and compactness of optical settings. Hence, this approach can be advantageous compared to the traditional one based on cascaded arrangement of optical elements. However, it comes with an obstacle—the class of accessible quantum states is narrower than that of the cascade counterpart. In this letter, we study this task using an example of three coupled nonlinear optical processes, namely, one parametric down-conversion and two of sum-frequency generation. To this end, the singular value decomposition has been applied to find the cascade representation of the compound field evolution. We have found the link between the parameters of the multiwave processes and the relevant cascade parameters—beam-splitting and squeezing parameters, by means of which the generated quantum states have been characterized. The relation between the squeezing parameters that has been found in the course of this work shows that the squeezing resource, produced in the parametric down-conversion, is shared among the modes involved in the compound interactions. Moreover, we have shown that the degree of two-mode entanglement carried by the up-converted frequencies cannot exceed that of the down-converted frequencies.
