Corner Transfer Matrices for the Gaussian Model

Abstract

Abstract We study Baxter's corner transfer matrix for a Gaussian model on a strongly anisotropic square lattice of finite size. The problem is equivalent to finding the normal modes of a vibrating chain with position‐dependent masses and springs. The eigenvalues are found analytically, using Carlitz polynomials, and the predictions of conformal invariance are verified for the critical system.

Finite-size scaling of corner transfer matrices for the two-dimensional Ising model

Ingo Peschel

The eigenvalue spectra of generalised corner transfer matrices are calculated for an Ising model on a square lattice. The predictions of conformal invariance at the critical point are thereby verified.

Diagonalisation of corner transfer matrix by orthogonal polynomials

Trong Tuong Truong, Ingo Peschel

The authors discuss the generator of Baxter's corner transfer matrix (1982) for a critical Ising model of finite size. They perform its diagonalisation in terms of special orthogonal polynomials and give an asymptotic expression of the eigenvalues for large size, which agrees with the conformal predictions.

CONFORMAL PROPERTIES OF CRITICAL ISING MODEL CORNER TRANSFER MATRICES

Brian Davies, Paul A. Pearce

The scaling spectra of finite-size Ising model corner transfer matrices (CTMs) are studied at criticality, using the fermion algebra. The low-lying eigenvalues collapse like 1/ log N for large N as predicted by conformal invariance. The shift in the largest eigenvalue is evaluated analytically using a generalized Euler-Maclaurin summation formula giving πc/6 log N with central charge c=1/2. The spectrum generating functions, for both fixed and free boundary conditions, are expressed simply in terms of the c=1/2 Virasoro characters χ∆(q) with modular parameter q= exp (−π/ log N) and conformal dimensions ∆=0, 1/2, 1/16.

Conformal invariance and critical spectrum of corner transfer matrices

Brian Davies, Paul A. Pearce

The finite-size scaling spectra of Ising model corner transfer matrices and their generators are studied at criticality. The generators are diagonalised using fermion algebra. The low-lying eigenvalues, given by the zeros of Meixner polynomials, are equally spaced and collapse like 1/log N for large N as predicted by conformal invariance. The asymptotics are obtained using a generalised Euler-Maclaurin summation formula. The shift in the largest eigenvalue is given analytically as pi c/6 log N with central charge c=1/2. The spectrum generating functions, for both fixed and free boundary conditions, are expressed simply in terms of the c=1/2 Virasoro characters chi Delta (q) with modular parameter q=exp(- pi /log N) and conformal dimensions Delta =0, 1/2, 1/16.

Scaling dimensions and conformal anomaly in anisotropic lattice spin models

Man-Sun Kim, Paul A. Pearce

The effect of anisotropic interactions on the eigenvalue spectrum of the row-to-row transfer matrix of critical lattice spin models is investigated. It is verified that the predictions of conformal theory apply to anisotropic systems if one allows for spatial rescaling by incorporating an anisotropy factor zeta =(a y /a x ) sin theta where a y and a x are lattice spacings and theta is an angle describing the anisotropy. For exactly solvable models these anisotropy angles can be calculated analytically using corner transfer matrices. This is done for the eight-vertex model, hard hexagons and interacting hard squares and it is found that theta = pi u/ lambda , 10u/3 and 5u respectively where u is the spectral parameter and lambda is the crossing parameter. For each of these models, the amplitude of the finite-size corrections to the free energy at criticality is found to be of the form pi zeta c/6N 2 where zeta is the anisotropy factor and the central charge or conformal anomaly is given by c=1, 4/5 and 7/10 respectively. This is an analytic result for the eight-vertex model. For the hard hexagon and square models the largest eigenvalues are found accurately by numerically solving their inversion identities for various anisotropies and strip widths up to N=48. Finally, the authors argue that the anisotropy angle for magnetic hard squares and the q-state Potts models is also given by theta = pi u/ lambda , so this result is quite general.

Corner transfer matrix of a critical free fermion system

Hans-Peter Eckle, Trong Tuong Truong

In order to diagonalize the generator of the corner transfer matrix of a critical free-fermion 8-vertex system with magnetic field the authors derive an integral representation for the eigenvector components of the generator. At large N they numerically verify the predictions of conformal invariance for critical systems.
