Abstract

A new method using Hamming codes to construct base matrices of (J,K)-regular LDPC convolutional codes with large free distance is presented. By proper labeling the corresponding base matrices and tailbiting these parent convolutional codes to given lengths, a large set of quasi-cyclic (QC) (J,K)-regular LDPC block codes with large minimum distance is obtained. The corresponding Tanner graphs have girth up to 14. This new construction is compared with two previously known constructions of QC (J,K)-regular LDPC block codes with large minimum distance exceeding (J + 1)!. Applying all three constructions, new QC (J,K)-regular block LDPC codes with J = 3 or 4, shorter codeword lengths and/or better distance properties than those of previously known codes are presented.

Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes: Influence of Proto- and Tanner-Graph Structure on Minimum Hamming Distance Upper Bounds

Roxana Smarandache, Pascal O. Vontobel

Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are an important instance of proto-graph-based LDPC codes. In this paper we present upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance of QC LDPC codes and study how these upper bounds depend on graph structure parameters (like variable degrees, check node degrees, girth) of the Tanner graph and of the underlying proto-graph. Moreover, for several classes of proto-graphs we present explicit QC LDPC code constructions that achieve (or come close to) the respective minimum Hamming distance upper bounds. Because of the tight algebraic connection between QC codes and convolutional codes, we can state similar results for the free Hamming distance of convolutional codes. In fact, some QC code statements are established by first proving the corresponding convolutional code statements and then using a result by Tanner that says that the minimum Hamming distance of a QC code is upper bounded by the free Hamming distance of the convolutional code that is obtained by “unwrapping” the QC code.

Quasi-cyclic asymptotically regular LDPC codes

David G. M. Mitchell, Roxana Smarandache, Michael Lentmaier +1 more

Families of asymptotically regular LDPC block code ensembles can be formed by terminating (J, K)-regular protograph-based LDPC convolutional codes. By varying the termination length, we obtain a large selection of LDPC block code ensembles with varying code rates, minimum distance that grows linearly with block length, and capacity approaching iterative decoding thresholds, despite the fact that the terminated ensembles are almost regular. In this paper, we investigate the properties of the quasi-cyclic (QC) members of such an ensemble. We show that an upper bound on the minimum Hamming distance of members of the QC sub-ensemble can be improved by careful choice of the component protographs used in the code construction. Further, we show that the upper bound on the minimum distance can be improved by using arrays of circulants in a graph cover of the protograph.

Searching for Voltage Graph-Based LDPC Tailbiting Codes With Large Girth

Irina E. Bocharova, Florian Hug, Rolf Johannesson +2 more

The relation between parity-check matrices of quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and biadjacency matrices of bipartite graphs supports searching for powerful LDPC block codes. Using the principle of tailbiting, compact representations of bipartite graphs based on convolutional codes can be found. Bounds on the girth and the minimum distance of LDPC block codes constructed in such a way are discussed. Algorithms for searching iteratively for LDPC block codes with large girth and for determining their minimum distance are presented. Constructions based on all-one matrices, Steiner Triple Systems, and QC block codes are introduced. Finally, new QC regular LDPC block codes with girth up to 24 are given.

Short quasi-cyclic LDPC codes from convolutional codes

Irina E. Bocharova, Boris D. Kudryashov, Roman V. Satyukov +1 more

We search for good regular quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes with J = 2 ones in each column. In order to simplify the search, QC LDPC codes are represented in the form of tail-biting (TB) convolutional codes. A modified BEAST algorithm is used for finding the free distance (minimum distance) and the girth of both parent convolutional and block LDPC codes. Representations of known bipartite graphs and LDPC based on finite geometries in the form of TB convolutional codes are found. This approach is further generalized for J = 3 QC LDPC codes. Examples of good short LDPC codes with large girth and minimum distance are given. For example, we present a rate 2=5 J = 3 QC LDPC (225, 92)- code with girth 8 and minimum distance 24.

Construction of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check codes using Hamming codewords

Haijing Zhong, Shancheng Zhao, Li Chen +1 more

In this paper, we propose a new approach to construct quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes using Hamming codewords of weight three, namely the HM-QC-LDPC codes. Thanks to the distance property of Hamming codes, length four cycles are avoided from the Tanner graph of the constructed codes, resulting in codes of girth six. This approach can be further extended to construct QC-LDPC codes of girth eight. Our numerical results show that the proposal has a better cycle profile than the progressive-edge-growth (PEG) constructed codes, and consequently prevails in performance. Moreover, the constructed QC-LDPC code prevails the LDPC code of the IEEE802.22 standard by 0.2 dB at the bit error rate (BER) of 10-8when the codeword length is within hundreds of bits, making it a promising candidate for scenarios where strict decoding latency is imposed.

Design of Quasi-Cyclic Cycle LDPC Codes over GF(q)

HU Shu-kai, Chao Chen, Rong Xia Sun +1 more

Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have several appealing properties regarding decoding, storage requirements and encoding aspects. In this paper, we focus on the QC LDPC codes over GF(q) whose parity-check matrices have fixed column weight j=2. By investigating two subgraphs in the Tanner graphs of the corresponding base matrices, we derive two upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance for this class of codes. In addition, a method is proposed to construct QC LDPC codes over GF(q), which have good Hamming distance distributions. Simulations show that our designed codes have good performance.
