Nonsecular expansion of evolution operator and field statistics

Abstract

A new expansion of the evolution operator is obtained that describes the interaction of an atom with a quantum-electromagnetic field. This expansion, in contrast to the traditional ones, does not contain secular terms. Time evolution of photon antibunching and bunching in degenerate two-photon processes in an atom is investigated. The method of radiation preparation having sub-Poisson statistics is discussed.

VARIOUS APPROACHES TO PHOTON ANTIBUNCHING IN SECOND-HARMONIC GENERATION 1

Adam Miranowicz, J. Bajer

We analyze the most popular approaches to photon antibunching as exemplified in a sim-ple model of second-harmonic generation. We find the exact evolution of the fundamental and harmonic fields for initial Fock states with small photon numbers. We show explicitly that definitions of photon antibunching based on the unnormalized, G(2)(t, t′), and normal-ized, g(2)(t, t′), two-time correlation functions describe distinct phenomena for nonstationary fields. For completeness, we also compare antibunching effects defined by the two-time and single-time correlations. 1 Photon antibunching Photon antibunching and sub-Poisson photon statistics (also called antibunching) reveal the quan-tum nature of light and therefore have received a great deal of attention during the last decades. The first detection of antibunched light by Kimble, Dagenais and Mandel [1] and first detection of sub-Poisson light by Short and Mandel [2] are regarded as milestones in the progress in quantum optics. In spite of many experimental and theoretical achievements, a deeper analysis of these effects seems to be necessary, particularly in the case of nonstationary fields. We shall clarify some of these aspects by referring to an example of second-harmonic generation. There are several commonly used definitions of photon antibunching for a single-mode radiation field (e.g., Refs. [1]–[9]): Definition I: The photon antibunching (see, e.g., Ref. [3]) occurs if the two-time light intensity correlation function G(2)(t, t+ τ) increases from its initial value at τ = 0,

Quantum statistical properties of the non-resonant interaction of a three-level atom with two radiation fields

Songen Sun

Quantum statistical properties such as first-order coherence, antibunching, sub-Poisson distribution and the probability distribution of photon number are studied by considering the non-resonant interaction of two radiation fields with a ' Lambda ' structure three-level atom. It is found that the different detunings and the different ratios of average photon number of two radiation fields as well as the time regime have a remarkable influence on quantum statistical properties of the two radiation fields. The author also emphasises that the initial atomic state plays an important role in the non-resonant interaction and tries to explore the connections among these non-classical effects.

Statistical properties of some nonlinear scattering processes

M. Bertolotti, Concita Sibilia, Jan Peřina +1 more

Quantum–statistical properties of radiation are studied under conditions of a nonlinear interaction between electromagnetic interfering fields and a relativistic electron beam, as well as under degenerate four-wave mixing. Conditions for the occurrence of photon bunching and antibunching, and of squeezed states are identified.

Interaction of radiation with atoms

G J Papadopoulos

A method utilising the coherent state variables for the electromagnetic field and appropriate spin variables for two-level atomsis developed for obtaining the dynamical evolution of the field and the atoms separately. The case of a single radiation mode interacting with two two-level atoms is studied. The time evolution of the photon number, starting from n photons and both atoms at their higher levels, is given. Furthermore, when the initial state consists of n photons and one of the atoms in its excited state with the other in its ground state, the temporal development of the photon number, as well as the motion of each atom, are obtained. In the latter case it becomes apparent that energy exchange takes place among the atomic systems, while the field acts as a transfer agent.

Dynamics of photon number quantum fluctuations in multiphoton processes

Valentine I. Zakharov, Vladimir G. Tyuterev

This paper discusses the principles of reduction of quantum noise in optical radiation. The dynamics of photon number fluctuations in direct and cascade two-photon processes is investigated. The paper considers the cases of absorption and emission for the fields originally prepared in coherent and thermal states. It is shown that photon antibunching and bunching should occur for the passed radiation. The photon antibunching effect is only in definite time intervals of field interaction with resonance absorbing or emitting systems. The possible cases of accumulation of photon antibunching effects are considered.

Multiphoton model for the interaction of single-mode squeezed-state light with a two-level atom

Shaozheng Jin

Multiphoton interaction of single-mode squeezed-state light and a two-level atom is considered based on the K-photon Jaynes–Cummings model. Time evolution of quantum fluctuation and photon statistical properties of the initial squeezing light are discussed. It is found that through interaction with a two-level atom, larger squeezing levels cannot be achieved in one-photon or multiphoton processes. For photon antibunching behavior of the light field, it is shown that a smaller initial squeezing level and an appropriately larger coherent part of the initial average photon number of the radiation field favor the generation of this nonclassical behavior, especially in the lower-order interaction processes.
