Abstract

We have measured -6.3 dB of relative intensity squeezing at 795 nm, generated by stimulated, nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a hot rubidium vapor. This scheme is of interest for experiments involving cold atoms or atomic ensembles.

Strong relative intensity squeezing by four-wave mixing in rubidium vapor

Colin F. McCormick, Vincent Boyer, E. Arimondo +1 more

We have measured -3.5 dB (-8.1 dB corrected for losses) relative intensity squeezing between probe and conjugate beams generated by stimulated, nondegenerate four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor. Unlike early observations of squeezing in atomic vapors based on saturation of a two-level system, our scheme uses a resonant nonlinearity based on ground-state coherences in a three-level system. Since this scheme produces narrowband, squeezed light near an atomic resonance, it is of interest for experiments involving cold atoms or atomic ensembles.

Strong Relative-Intensity Squeezing of Light from Four-Wave Mixing in Hot Rb Vapor

Paul D. Lett, Vincent Boyer, Alberto M. Marino +2 more

We use nondegenerate four-wave mixing in hot atomic vapor to generate up to −7.1dB of relative-intensity squeezing between the probe and conjugate beams. This narrowband, multispatial-mode, squeezed light near an atomic resonance is of interest for image processing as well as experiments involving atomic ensembles.

Multi-Spatial-Mode Squeezed Light from Four-Wave Mixing in Hot Rb Vapor

Paul D. Lett, Vincent Boyer, Alberto M. Marino +4 more

We demonstrate multi-spatial-mode, nondegenerate four-wave mixing in hot atomic Rb vapor. We generate images with strong intensity-difference squeezing between the amplified probe and the generated conjugate beams. Measurements to quantify the multi-mode nature of the beams will be presented. We also report on progress in improving the relative-intensity squeezing. This narrowband, squeezed light near an atomic resonance is also of interest for experiments involving atomic ensembles.

Relative-intensity squeezing at audio frequencies using four-wave mixing in an atomic vapor

Colin F. McCormick, Alberto M. Marino, Vincent Boyer +1 more

We demonstrate the use of four-wave mixing in hot atomic vapor to generate up to -7.1 dB of measured relative-intensity squeezing. Due to its intrinsic simplicity, our system is strongly decoupled from environmental noise, and we observe more than -4 dB of squeezing down to frequencies as low as 5 kHz. This robust source of narrowband squeezed light may be useful for a variety of applications, such as coupling to atomic ensembles and enhancing the sensitivity of photothermal spectroscopy.

Realization of low frequency and controllable bandwidth squeezing based on a four-wave-mixing amplifier in rubidium vapor

Cunjin Liu, Jietai Jing, Zhifan Zhou +4 more

We experimentally demonstrate the creation of two correlated beams generated by a nondegenerate four-wave-mixing amplifier at λ=795 nm in hot rubidium vapor. We achieve intensity difference squeezing at frequencies as low as 1.5 kHz which is so far the lowest frequency to observe squeezing in an atomic system. The squeezing spans from 5.5 to 16.5 MHz with a maximum squeezing of -5 dB at 1 MHz. We can control the squeezing bandwidth by changing the pump power. Both low frequency and controllable bandwidth squeezing show great potential in sensitivity detection and precise control of the atom optics measurement.

Compact diode-laser-pumped quantum light source based on four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor

Zhongzhong Qin, Jietai Jing, Jun Zhou +4 more

Using a nondegenerate four-wave mixing process in hot rubidium vapor, we demonstrate a compact diode-laser-pumped system for the generation of intensity-difference squeezing down to 8 kHz with a maximum squeezing of -7 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of kilohertz-level intensity-difference squeezing using a semiconductor laser as the pump source. This scheme is of interest for experiments involving atomic ensembles, quantum communications, and precision measurements. The diode-laser-pumped system would extend the range of possible applications for squeezing due to its low cost, ease of operation, and ease of integration.
