Quasi-energy of single quantum particles and a Bose-Einstein condensate in a dynamical trap

Abstract

The quasi-energy states have been found analytically for single quantum particles and an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap with periodically oscillating walls with a small modulation depth. A resonance is shown to exist as the modulation frequency approaches the difference of the frequencies corresponding to the levels in the unperturbed problem. Quasi-energy splitting and, accordingly, beats with a periodic population exchange between two levels in resonance have been found in the resonant case. Bistability of the response to trap size modulation, when the sustenance (depending on the initial conditions) of various quasi-energy states is possible under the same conditions, has been found for a Bose-Einstein condensate under resonance conditions.

Parametric Resonance Phenomena in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Breaking of Macroscopic Quantum Self-Trapping

Luca Salasnich

We analyze the periodic tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential which has an oscillating energy barrier. We show that the dynamics of the Bose condensate critically depends on the frequency $ω$ of the oscillating energy barrier. In the regime of periodic macroscopic quantum tunneling (PMQT) with frequency $ω_J$, the population imbalance of the condensate in the two wells can be enhanced under the condition of parametric resonance $ω= 2 ω_J$. Instead, in the regime of macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST), we find that MQST can be reduced or suppressed under the condition of parametric resonance between the frequency $ω$ of the energy barrier and the frequency $ω_{ST}$ of oscillation through the barrier of the very small fraction of particles which remain untrapped during MQST.

Quantum resonance and antiresonance for a periodically kicked Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional box

Dario Poletti, Libin Fu, Jie Liu +1 more

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a periodically kicked Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a one-dimensional (1D) box both numerically and theoretically, emphasizing on the phenomena of quantum resonance and antiresonance. The quantum resonant behavior of BEC is different from the single particle case but the antiresonance condition (Tau = 2pi and alpha = 0) is not affected by the atomic interaction. For the antiresonance case, the nonlinearity (atom interaction) causes the transition between oscillation and quantum beating. For the quantum resonance case, because of the coherence of BEC, the energy increase is oscillating and the rate is dramatically affected by the many-body interaction. We also discuss the relation between the quantum resonant behavior and the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) or non-KAM property of the corresponding classical system.

Coherent atomic oscillations and resonances between coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent trapping potential

F. Kh. Abdullaev, R. A. Kraenkel

We study the quantum coherent tunneling between two Bose-Einstein condensates separated through an oscillating trap potential. The cases of slow and rapid varying in the time trap potential are considered. In the case of a slowly varying trap, we study the nonlinear resonances and chaos in the oscillations of the relative atomic population. Using the Melnikov function approach, we find the conditions for chaotic macroscopic quantum-tunneling phenomena to exist. Criteria for the onset of chaos are also given. We find the values of frequency and modulation amplitude which lead to chaos on oscillations in the relative population, for any given damping and the nonlinear atomic interaction. In the case of a rapidly varying trap, we use the multiscale expansion method in the parameter $\ensuremath{\varepsilon}=1/\ensuremath{\Omega},$ where \ensuremath{\Omega} is the frequency of modulations, and we derive the averaged system of equations for the modes. The analysis of this system shows that new macroscopic quantum self-trapping regions, in comparison with the constant trap case, exist.

Resonant wave formation in Bose-Einstein condensates

Alexandru I. Nicolin

We investigate analytically the dynamics of a trapped, quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate subject to resonant and nonresonant periodic modulation of the transverse confinement. The dynamics of the condensate is described variationally through a set of coupled ordinary differential equations, and the period of the excited waves is determined analytically using a Mathieu-type analysis. For a modulation frequency equal to that of the radial confinement we show that the predicted period of the resonant wave is in agreement with the existing experimental results. Finally, we present a detailed comparison between the resonant waves and the Faraday waves that emerge outside of resonance.

Self—Trapping State and Atomic Tunnelling Current of an Atomic Bose—Einstein Condensate Interacting with a Laser Field in a Double—Well Potential

YUZhao-Xian, JIAOZhi-Yong

We present a theoretical treatment of dynamics of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensation interacting witha single-mode quantized travelling-wave laser field in a double-well potential. When the atom-field system is initiallyin a coherent state, expressions for the energy exchange between atoms and photons are derived. It is revealed thatatoms in the two wells can be in a self-trapping state when the tunnelling frequency satisfies two specific conditions,in which the resonant and far off-resonant cases are included. It is found that there is an alternating current with twodifferent sinusoidal oscillations between the two wells, but no dc characteristic of the atomic tunnelling current occurs. It should be emphasized that when without the laser field, both the population difference and the atomic tunnellingcurrent are only a single oscillation. But they will respectively become a superposition of two oscillations with differentoscillatory frequencies in the presence of the laser field. For the two oscillations of the population difference, one alwayshas an increment in the oscillatory frequency, the other can have an increment or a decrease under different cases. Theseconclusions are also suitable to those of the atomic tunnelling current. As a possible application, by measurement of theatomic tunnelling current between the two wells, the number of Bose-condensed atoms can be evaluated. lBy properlyselecting the laser field, the expected atomic tunnelling current can be obtained too.
