Exact density matrix for the degenerate-Raman-coupled model in the presence of collisions

Ravinder Rupchand Puri, G. S. Agarwal

Exact expressions are obtained for the density matrix in the operator form and for the quasiprobabilities for the system of an atom undergoing Raman transitions between two degenerate levels on interaction with a quantized field in a lossy cavity driven by an external field. The model is generalized to include the effects of atomic dephasing collisions. The spectral properties of the radiation are discussed, and the equation of motion of the density matrix is derived in the presence of collisions and an external drive. The equation is found to be of second order with respect to time in the absence of the driving field and also analytically solvable.

Quantum-Mechanical Transport Equation for Atomic Systems

P. R. Berman

A quantum-mechanical transport equation (QMTE) is derived which should be applicable to a wide range of problems involving the interaction of radiation with atoms or molecules which are also subject to collisions with perturber atoms. The equation follows the time evolution of the macroscopic atomic density matrix elements of atoms located at classical position $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{R}}$ and moving with classical velocity $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{v}}$ It is quantum mechanical in the sense that all collision kernels or rates which appear have been obtained from a quantum-mechanical theory and, as such, properly take into account the energy-level variations and velocity changes of the active (emitting or absorbing) atom produced in collisions with perturber atoms. The QMTE represents a somewhat different formulation of the problem than that considered in earlier works. The present formulation is better suited to problems involving high-intensity external fields, such as those encountered in laser physics.

Field-theoretical derivation of the master equation in quantum optics

Hans C. Fogedby

The basic tool in quantum optics for the description of atomic systems interacting with coherent and incoherent radiation fields is the atomic density matrix governed by the master equation. In the present paper we apply standard condensed-matter nonequilibrium many-body methods to the problem of a two-level atom driven by an external laser field and relaxing by interaction with the radiation field. We recover the well-known dressed-atom picture and, in particular, we present an alternative derivation of the master equation for the atomic density matrix which allows simple generalizations.
