Abstract

Quantum storage of multiple optical modes affords improved performance for quantum repeaters. We present new analytic and numerical results unifying the scaling of the multimode storage capacity for various memory protocols in artificially broadened ensembles.

Multimode Memories in Atomic Ensembles

The ability to store multiple optical modes in a quantum memory allows for increased efficiency of quantum communication and computation. Here we compute the multimode capacity of a variety of quantum memory protocols based on light storage in ensembles of atoms. We find that adding a controlled inhomogeneous broadening improves this capacity significantly.

A technique to increase the capacity of a quantum memory is demonstrated. The method is based on shaping the profile of an optical pumping pulse, thus creating a high-resolution atomic comb structure that acts as a time-multiplexing optical storage device.

High-Capacity Spatial Multimode Quantum Memories Based on Atomic Ensembles

Anna Grodecka-Grad, Emil Zeuthen, Anders Søndberg Sørensen

We study spatial multimode quantum memories based on light storage in extended ensembles of Λ-type atoms. We show that such quantum light-matter interfaces allow for highly efficient storage of many spatial modes. In particular, forward operating memories possess excellent scaling with the important physical parameters: quadratic scaling with the Fresnel number and even cubic with the optical depth of the atomic ensemble. Thus, the simultaneous use of both the longitudinal and transverse shape of the stored spin wave modes constitutes a valuable and so far overlooked resource for multimode quantum memories.
