Upper bounds on the rate of LDPC codes

Abstract

We derive upper bounds on the rate of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes for which reliable communication is achievable. We first generalize Gallager's (1963) bound to a general binary-input symmetric-output channel. We then proceed to derive tighter bounds. We also derive upper bounds on the rate as a function of the minimum distance of the code. We consider both individual codes and ensembles of codes.

On upper bounds for the achievable rates of LDPC codes

Noam Presman, Simon N. Litsyn

Upper bounds on the mutual entropy of syndrome components of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are developed. Using these bounds, an upper bound is derived on the rates of LDPC codes for which reliable communication over a memoryless binary-input symmetric-output (MBIOS) channel is achievable. This bound improves on the earlier known bounds due to Gallager, Burshtein et al., and Weichmann-Sason.

Bounds on the maximum likelihood decoding error probability of low density parity check codes

G. Miller, D. Burshtein

We derive bounds on the error probability of ML decoded LDPC (low density parity check) codes, for any binary-input symmetric-output channel. For appropriately chosen ensembles of LDPC codes, reliable communication is possible up to channel capacity. The lower and upper bounds coincide asymptotically, indicating a polynomially decreasing ensemble averaged error probability. For ensembles with suitably chosen parameters, the error probability of almost all codes is exponentially decreasing. Furthermore, the error exponent can be set arbitrarily close to the standard random coding exponent.

On Achievable Rates and Complexity of LDPC Codes for Parallel Channels with Application to Puncturing

Igal Sason, Gil Wiechman

This paper considers the achievable rates and decoding complexity of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over statistically independent parallel channels. The paper starts with the derivation of bounds on the conditional entropy of the transmitted codeword given the received sequence at the output of the parallel channels; the component channels are considered to be memoryless, binary-input, and output-symmetric (MBIOS). These results serve for the derivation of an upper bound on the achievable rates of ensembles of LDPC codes under optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding when their transmission takes place over parallel MBIOS channels. The paper relies on the latter bound for obtaining upper bounds on the achievable rates of ensembles of randomly and intentionally punctured LDPC codes over MBIOS channels. The paper also provides a lower bound on the decoding complexity (per iteration) of ensembles of LDPC codes under message-passing iterative decoding over parallel MBIOS channels; the bound is given in terms of the gap between the rate of these codes for which reliable communication is achievable and the channel capacity. The paper presents a diagram which shows interconnections between the theorems introduced in this paper and some other previously reported results. The setting which serves for the derivation of the bounds on the achievable rates and decoding complexity is general, and the bounds can be applied to other scenarios which can be treated as different forms of communication over parallel channels.

Bounds on Achievable Rates of LDPC Codes Used Over the Binary Erasure Channel

Ohad Barak, David Burshtein, Meir Feder

We derive upper bounds on the maximum achievable rate of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes used over the binary erasure channel (BEC) under Gallager's decoding algorithm, given their right-degree distribution. We demonstrate the bounds on the ensemble of right-regular LDPC codes and compare them with an explicit left-degree distribution constructed from the given right degree.

Performance of low-density parity-check codes with linear minimum distance

Hossein Pishro-Nik, Faramarz Fekri

This correspondence studies the performance of the iterative decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles that have linear typical minimum distance and stopping set size. We first obtain a lower bound on the achievable rates of these ensembles over memoryless binary-input output-symmetric channels. We improve this bound for the binary erasure channel. We also introduce a method to construct the codes meeting the lower bound for the binary erasure channel. Then, we give upper bounds on the rate of LDPC codes with linear minimum distance when their right degree distribution is fixed. We compare these bounds to the previously derived upper bounds on the rate when there is no restriction on the code ensemble.

Bounds on the maximum-likelihood decoding error probability of low-density parity-check codes

G. Miller, David Burshtein

We derive both upper and lower bounds on the decoding error probability of maximum-likelihood (ML) decoded low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The results hold for any binary-input symmetric-output channel. Our results indicate that for various appropriately chosen ensembles of LDPC codes, reliable communication is possible up to channel capacity. However, the ensemble averaged decoding error probability decreases polynomially, and not exponentially. The lower and upper bounds coincide asymptotically, thus showing the tightness of the bounds. However, for ensembles with suitably chosen parameters, the error probability of almost all codes is exponentially decreasing, with an error exponent that can be set arbitrarily close to the standard random coding exponent.
