STUDY OF PHASE SEPARATION IN THE HUBBARD MODEL1

Abstract

We study the behavior of the mean number of particles <n> as a function of the chemical potential μ in the two dimensional Hubbard model with both attractive and repulsive interaction, using a quantum Monte Carlo method. Working at U/t=10, 4 and −4 on lattices with 4×4, 6×6 and 8×8 sites, we do not find evidence of phase separation.

We study the behavior of the mean number of particles 〈n〉 (density) as a function of the chemical potential \ensuremath{\mu} in the two-dimensional Hubbard model, using a quantum Monte Carlo method. Working at U/t=10, 4, and -4 on lattices with 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4, 6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}6, and 8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}8 sites, we do not find evidence of phase separation.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study of an Extended Hubbard Model on a Two-Leg Ladder

Tomo Munehisa, Yasuko Munehisa

An extended Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder is numerically studied by means of the quantum Monte Carlo techniques. The model we study has the nearest-neighbor interactions which are repulsive along chains and attractive for rungs. The plots of the doping parameter versus the chemical potential show two cliff-like regions and a large plateau region. Results on the charge susceptibility suggest it diverges in these cliff-like regions. These observations might imply a signal to the phase separation, which should be related to the effective attractive interactions along chains.

Phase separation in the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Gang Su

By making use of known exact results and symmetry properties for the one-band Hubbard model, we show in a somewhat exact manner that there is no phase separation on a square lattice at arbitrary fillings at finite temperature for both attractive and repulsive on-site Coulomb interaction. This result is consistent with the quantum Monto Carlo calculation.

Some Properties of Two-Dimensional Extended Repulsive Hubbard Model with Intersite Magnetic Interactions - A~Monte Carlo Study

Szymon Murawski, Konrad Jerzy Kapcia, Grzegorz Pawłowski +1 more

In this paper the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with intersite magnetic Ising-like interaction in the atomic limit is analyzed by means of the classical Monte Carlo method in the grand canonical ensemble.Such an eective simple model could describe behavior of insulating (anti)ferromagnets. In the model considered the Coulomb interaction (U ) is on-site and the magnetic interactions in z-direction (J > 0, antiferromagnetic) are restricted to nearest-neighbors.Simulations of the model have been performed on a square lattice consisting of N = L × L = 400 sites (L = 20) in order to obtain the full phase diagram for U/(4J) = 1.Results obtained for on-site repulsion (U > 0) show that, apart from homogeneous non-ordered (NO) and ordered magnetic (antiferromagnetic, AF) phases, there is also a region of phase separation (PS: AF/NO) occurrence. We present a phase diagram as well as some thermodynamic properties of the model for the case of U/(4J) = 1 (and arbitrary chemical potential and arbitrary electron concentration). The AFNO transition can be second-order as well as rst-order and the tricritical point occurs on the diagram.

Ring exchange and phase separation in the two-dimensional boson Hubbard model

V. G. Rousseau, Richard T. Scalettar, G. G. Batrouni

We present quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the soft-core Bosonic Hubbard model with a ring exchange term $K$. For values of $K$ which exceed roughly half the on-site repulsion $U$, the density is a nonmonotonic function of the chemical potential, indicating that the system has a tendency to phase separate. This behavior is confirmed by an examination of the density-density structure factor at small momenta and real-space images of the boson configurations. Adding a near-neighbor repulsion can compete with phase separation, but still does not give rise to a stable normal Bose liquid.

Phase separation andd-wave superconductivity in a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor attractive interaction

W. P. Su

Inhomogeneities on various length scales suggesting phase separation seem to be a generic feature of hole-doped high-temperature superconducting cuprates. Also firmly established is the d-wave symmetry of the superconducting state. The interplay of superconductivity and phase separation has been noted in previous mean-field studies of correlated electron models. To further explore this issue in a more rigorous approach we have conducted quantum Monte Carlo calculations of a two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor attractive interaction. For a vanishing on-site repulsion, the result agrees with that of Micnas, Ranninger, and Robaszkiewicz [Phys. Rev. B 39, 11 653 (1989)], and indicates that for a given strength of the attractive interaction, homogeneous d-wave superconducting phase can exist only above a critical doping concentration, below which phase separation occurs. A finite on-site repulsion modifies the phase separation behavior. A stronger d-wave pairing correlation is seen in the inhomogeneous phase compared to the homogeneous phase.

We present quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the soft-core Bosonic Hubbard model with a ring exchange term KKK. This behavior is confirmed by an examination of the density-density structure factor at small momenta and real-space images of the boson configurations.
