Relativistic Two-Body Problem in Quantum Theory

Abstract

A general method to treat the quantal two-body problem relativistically is developed on the line of Dirac's many-time theory. The case where two charged fermions interact with each other through the electromagnetic field is investigated as an example. We construct a canonical transformation which eliminates the electromagnetic field variables in the original Schrödinger equations, and derive the potential energy between two charged particles. Finally, some properties of the simultaneous wave equations for the system of two particles are discussed, and a method to treat the stationary state of that system is indicated.

Unitary Relativistic Quantum Dynamics and Electromagnetic Field

In this chapter, we consider a quantum particle wave function with a bound spectrum of velocity c, and obtain the relativistic momentum based on the group velocity of this wave function. With a space-time isometry condition, the Lorentz transformation and the relativistic dynamics were obtained. Considering a field interacting with a quantum particle as a four-vector conjugated to the space-time vector in the time-dependent phase, we obtain the Lorenz force and the Maxwell equations. It is interesting that only the Ampère-Maxwell equation of a magnetic circuit is specific to the electromagnetic field, while the other equations are general for a field interacting with a charged quantum particle. Considering the time-dependent phase of a quantum particle interacting with an electromagnetic field with a space-time homogeneity condition, we obtain Lorentz transformations for this field. For a quantum particle at a non-relativistic velocity, we obtain a wave function with a very rapidly-varying factor, of a frequency proportional to the rest energy of this particle. From the Schrödinger equation of a particle with a relativistic Hamiltonian, we obtain a split of the wave function into four components, describing a proper rotation of this particle with an angular momentum called spin (Dirac’s relativistic electron theory). Moreover, we also calculate electron potential in the magnetic field, and two-electron interaction potential.

Equations of Relativistic and Quantum Mechanics (without Spin)

Vagram M. Mekhitarian

A relativistically invariant representation of the generalized momentum of a particle in an external field is proposed. In this representation, the dependence of the potentials of the interaction of the particle with the field on the particle velocity is taken into account. The exact correspondence of the expressions of energy and potential energy for the classical Hamiltonian is established, which makes identical the solutions to the problems of mechanics with relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches. The invariance of the proposed representation of the generalized momentum makes it possible to equivalently describe a physical system in geometrically conjugate spaces of kinematic and dynamic variables. Relativistic invariant equations are proposed for the action function and the wave function based on the invariance of the representation of the generalized momentum. The equations have solutions for any values of the constant interaction of the particle with the field, for example, in the problem of a hydrogen-like atom, when the atomic number of the nucleus is Z > 137. Based on the parametric representation of the action, the expression for the canonical Lagrangian, the equations of motion, and the expression for the force acting on the charge are derived when moving in an external electromagnetic field. The Dirac equation with the correct inclusion of the interaction for a particle in an external field is presented. In this form, the solutions of the equations are not limited by the value of the interaction constant. The solutions of the problem of charge motion in a constant electric field, the problems for a particle in a potential well and the passage of a particle through a potential barrier, the problems of motion in an exponential field (Morse), and also the problems of a hydrogen atom are given.

Equations of Relativistic and Quantum Mechanics and Exact Solutions of Some Problems

Relativistic Mechanics of Two Interacting Particles and Bilocal Theory

Takehiko Takabayasi

New relativistic mechanics of two-particle system is set forth, where the two constituent particles are interacting by an arbitrary (central) action-at-a-distance. The fundamental equations are presented in a form covariant under general transformation of parameters parametrizing the world lines of constituent particles. The theory represents the proper relativistic generalization of the usual Newtonian mechanics in the sense that it tends in the non-relativistic (and weak interaction) limit to the usual mechanics of two particles moving under a corresponding non-relativistic potential. For the analysis of theory it is convenient to choose a certain particular gauge (i.e., parametrization) fixed by two gauge relations. This brings the theory to a canonical formalism accompanied by two weak equations, and in this gauge quantization can be performed. The result verifies that the relativistic quantum mechanics for two particles interacting by an action-at-a-distance is just represented by a bilocal wave equation and a subsidiary condition, with the clarification of its correspondence-theoretical fundation and internal dynamics. As an example the case of Hooke-type force is illustrated, where the internal motions are elliptic oscillations in the center-of-mass frame. Its quantum theory just reproduces the original form of bilocal theory giving bound states lying on a straightly rising trajectory and on its daughter trajectories.

Lorentz invariant quantum dynamics in the multi-time formalism

Matthias Lienert

The present work deals with the idea of a multi-time wave function, i.e. a wave function with N space-time arguments for N particles. Firstly, a careful derivation of the necessity of multi-time wave functions in relativistic quantum mechanics is given and a general formalism is developed. Secondly, the physical meaning of multi-time wave functions is discussed in connection with realistic relativistic quantum theories, in particular the "Hypersurface Bohm-Dirac" model. Thirdly, a first interacting model for multi-time wave functions of two Dirac particles in 1+1 space-time dimensions is constructed. Interaction is achieved by means of boundary conditions on configuration space-time, a mechanism closely related to zero-range physics. This is remarkable, as a restrictive consistency condition rules out various types of interaction and consequently no rigorous interacting model was known before. Fourthly, the model is extended to more general types of interaction and to the N-particle case. Higher dimensions are also discussed. Finally, the "Two-Body Dirac equations" of constraint theory are placed within the context of the multi-time formalism. In particular, the question of probability conservation is critically discussed, leading to further implications both for fundamental and applied questions.

Separable quasipotential formulation of the relativistic dynamics for three point particles

Horace W. Crater

In this paper I develop a relativistic Hamiltonian and Schr\"odinger equation for three particles using a generalization of the assumptions that give rise to Todorov's relativistic quasipotential equation for two particles. This formalism is treated by a method that leads to a generalization of the separable Lagrange equilateral-triangle solution from gravitational nonrelativistic to relativistic nongravitational bound-state problems in quantum as well as classical mechanics. As an example I derive an analytic solution for the spectrum of a three-body system bound by scalar Coulomb forces.
