Abstract

We measured the magnetization processes of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound, Cu benzoate. From the inelastic neutron scattering and the specific heat measurements it was recently discovered that the substance exhibits an unexpected gap which varies approximately as the 2/3 power of an applied magnetic field. The primary mechanism of the gap formation is produced by an effective staggered field due to both the alternating g-tensor and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We observed the effect of the effective staggered field on the magnetization process of Cu benzoate as a rounding behavior near the saturation field as well as an initial nonlinear increment near zero field. The experimental results are well reproduced by the numerical calculation on the Hamiltonian which includes the appropriate term of the staggered field, using the finite temperature density matrix renormalization group method.

Field-induced gap in Cu benzoate and other S=12 antiferromagnetic chains

Ian K. Affleck, Masaki Oshikawa

Recent experiments on the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic chain compound, Cu benzoate, discovered an unexpected gap scaling as approximately the $\frac{2}{3}$ power of an applied magnetic field. A theory of this gap, based on an effective staggered field, orthogonal to the applied uniform field, resulting from a staggered gyromagnetic tensor and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, leading to a sine-Gordon quantum field theory, has been developed. Here we discuss many aspects of this subject in considerable detail, including a review of the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ chain in a uniform field, a spin-wave theory analysis of the uniform plus staggered field problem, exact amplitudes for the scaling of gap, staggered susceptibility and staggered magnetization with field or temperature, intensities of soliton and breather peaks in the structure function, and field and temperature dependence of the total susceptibility.

Field-induced gap in the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain: A density-matrix renormalization-group study

Jizhong Lou, Shaojin Qin, Changfeng Chen +2 more

We study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we explore the high magnetic field regime where interesting behaviors in the field-induced gap, magnetization, and spin correlation functions are found. Careful examination of the low energy properties and magnetization reveals interesting competing effects of the staggered and uniform fields. The incommensurate behavior in the spin correlation functions is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The present work reproduces earlier results in good agreement with experimental data on copper benzoate and predicts new interesting field-induced features at very high magnetic field.

S=12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with staggered fields: Copper pyrimidine and copper benzoate using the density matrix renormalization group for transfer matrices

S. Glocke, Andreas Klümper, Harison Rakoto +3 more

We consider the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in a staggered magnetic field describing materials such as copper benzoate and copper pyrimidine dinitrate. Using the density matrix renormalization group for transfer matrices (TMRG) we calculate the magnetization of these materials at finite temperature and arbitrary magnetic field. These results are in excellent agreement with experimental data, allowing for a determination of the inhomogeneity parameter $c$ of copper benzoate $(c=0.043)$ and copper pyrimidine dinitrate $(c=0.11)$. The TMRG approach can be applied to rather low temperatures, yielding singular field and temperature dependences of susceptibilities.

Thermodynamic Properties of theS=1/2 Heisenberg Chain with Staggered Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya Interaction

Naokazu Shibata, Kazuo Ueda

Thermodynamic properties of the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain in transverse staggered magnetic field H^y_s and uniform magnetic field H^x perpendicular to the staggered field is studied by the finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization-group method. The uniform and staggered magnetization and specific heat are calculated from zero temperature to high temperatures up to T/J=4 under various strength of magnetic fields from H^y_s/J, H^x/J=0 to 2.4. The specific heat and magnetization of the effective Hamiltonian of the Yb_4As_3 are also presented, and field induced gap formation and diverging magnetic susceptibility at low temperature are shown.

Spin dynamics of S = 1/2 Heisenberg chains with a staggered transverse field: electron spin resonance studies (Review Article)

Sergei A. Zvyagin

This article is a review of the recent achievements in experimental studies of magnetic excitations in the copper pyrimidine dinitrate [PM–Cu(NO3)2(H2O)2]n (PM = pyrimidine), an S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain material with an alternating g-tensor and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, by means of high-field electron spin resonance (ESR). Due to this alternation, in the 1D critical regime this material exhibits a field-induced gap. The excitation spectrum is formed by solitons and their bound states, breathers, and can be effectively described using the sine-Gordon model. With increasing temperature, the soliton-breather regime can be suppressed, resulting in a substantial evolution of ESR parameters. These changes can be described using a new theoretical concept recently proposed for S = 1/2 AF chains with a staggered transverse field. High magnetic field induces a transition into the spin-polarized state with the excitation spectrum formed by magnons. Nonmonotonous behavior of the field-induced gap is observed in vicinity of the saturation field. Experimental data are compared with results of existing theoretical approaches, revealing excellent agreement with predictions.

Effects of the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on entanglement in antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain

Cai Zhuo, Lu Wen-Bin, Yongjun Liu +1 more

By using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the spin entanglement in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions is investigated. It is found that the staggered DM interactions remove the field-induced second order quantum phase transition of the system at the magnitude of magnetic field H=2, and lead to the vanishing of the anomalous behavior of quantum entanglement. Also, the staggered DM interactions eliminate the divergence of entanglement range. It means the disappearance of the factorizing point in the model studied. Due to the presence of the staggered DM interactions, the system will never come to the state of saturated ferromagnetism under finite magnetic fields, thus maintaining the spin entanglement. The staggered DM interactions favor the tuning of the strength and range of spin entanglement.
