Abstract

Spatial structures in extended nonlinear optical devices can display important quantum features. For example, quantum images in degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPO) show quadrature squeezing in the near field and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations in the far field. We present here a new kind of spatial structure induced by quantum fluctuations in the DOPO: arrays of cavity solitons.

We illustrate the spatial quantum features that emerge in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold, where the signal field is purely generated by quantum fluctuations. We analyze the behaviour of the spatial correlation function of a generic quadrature component of the signal field in both cases of a cavity with plane mirrors and a cavity with spherical mirrors. The correlation length diverges when the semiclassical threshold for signal field generation is approached. We focus on the novel concept of quantum image, which is analyzed both in the near field and in the far field.

Quantum images in nonlinear optics

We illustrate the concept of quantum image in the context of degenerate parametric oscillators. In the case of a cavity with planar mirrors, we show the gradual transformation of a quantum image into a classical image as the threshold region is scanned. Thus the quantum image behaves as a precursor of the roll pattern which appears above threshold. In the far field, the configuration of the spatial correlation function of the intensity and of the quadrature components shows unambiguously the quantum nature of fluctuations that generate the quantum image, leading to effects of quantum noise reduction below the shot noise level, and to the formulation of an Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox.

Theory of quantum fluctuations of optical dissipative structures and its application to the squeezing properties of bright cavity solitons

Isabel Pérez–Arjona, Eugenio Roldán, Germán J. de Valcárcel

We present a method for the study of quantum fluctuations of dissipative structures forming in nonlinear optical cavities, which we illustrate in the case of a degenerate, type I optical parametric oscillator. The method consists in (i) taking into account explicitly, through a collective variable description, the drift of the dissipative structure caused by the quantum noise, and (ii) expanding the remaining---internal---fluctuations in the biorthonormal basis associated to the linear operator governing the evolution of fluctuations in the linearized Langevin equations. We obtain general expressions for the squeezing and intensity fluctuations spectra. Then we theoretically study the squeezing properties of a special dissipative structure, namely, the bright cavity soliton. After reviewing our previous result that in the linear approximation there is a perfectly squeezed mode irrespective of the values of the system parameters, we study which are the better squeezed modes at the different bifurcations that the cavity soliton can suffer, as well as the squeezing level attainable when the homodyne detection is made with a plane-wave local oscillator field. In this last case, the squeezing level is quite large in most of the existence domain of the cavity soliton. We then take into account the effect of the detector size and find that, in general, squeezing degrades as the detector is made smaller, except for detector sizes around the cavity soliton size, in which case there is an interesting deviation from the general trend.

We present a general theory of quantum fluctuations of dissipative structures in nonlinear optical cavities with transverse translation invariance. Perfect squeezing of the transverse momentum, detectable under homodyning, occurs irrespectively of the system parameters.

Quantum fluctuations of degenerate optical parametric oscillators’ cavity solitons (CS) are studied. We show that CSs are sources of perfectly squeezed light that exhibit photon fluctuations below the shot-noise level as well.
