Abstract

We demonstrate single trapped ion-single photon interaction by the detection of quantum jumps, strongly correlated with the detection of the quantum-correlated heralding photon. This is a step towards controlling single-photon absorption and transferring photon-to-atom entanglement.

We establish photonic interaction between two distant single calcium ions. Triggered single photons with controlled temporal shape are released in the sender ion; their absorption by the receiver ion is detected employing a quantum-jump scheme.

Single Atom – Single Photon Interfaces

In an experimental system of two distant ion traps we trap simultaneously strings of Ca+ ions and observe Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between their scattered photons. We also generate entangled photon pairs whose frequency and bandwidth are matched to an absorption line in the ions, and work towards heralded single photon – single ion interaction.

We present a single-photon to single-atom interface, where a heralded single photon generated by Spontaneous Parametric Conversion is absorbed by a single trapped ion, subsequently generating a single Raman-scattered photon that heralds the absorption event.

Emission and Absorption of Single Photons by Single Atoms

For quantum networking, we show high-rate single-mode emission of bandwidth-tunable single photons from a single ion, and heralded absorption by the ion of single photons from SPDC photon pairs. The heralded absorption preserves entanglement.

Atom-Atom Entanglement by Single-Photon Detection

L. Slodička, Gabriel Hetet, N. Röck +3 more

A scheme for entangling distant atoms is realized, as proposed in the seminal paper by [C. Cabrillo et al., Phys. Rev. A 59, 1025 (1999)]. The protocol is based on quantum interference and detection of a single photon scattered from two effectively one meter distant laser cooled and trapped atomic ions. The detection of a single photon heralds entanglement of two internal states of the trapped ions with high rate and with a fidelity limited mostly by atomic motion. Control of the entangled state phase is demonstrated by changing the path length of the single-photon interferometer.

Heralded Photonic Interaction between Distant Single Ions

Michael Schug, Jan Huwer, Christoph Kurz +2 more

We establish a heralded interaction between two remotely trapped single (40)Ca(+) ions through the exchange of single photons. In the sender ion, we release single photons with a controlled temporal shape on the P(3/2) to D(5/2) transition and transmit them to the distant receiver ion. Individual absorption events in the receiver ion are detected by quantum jumps. For continuously generated photons, the absorption reduces significantly the lifetime of the long-lived D(5/2) state. For triggered single-photon transmission, we observe a coincidence between the emission at the sender and quantum jump events at the receiver.
