Abstract

We present the joint photon-number statistics of a locally photon-subtracted two-mode vacuum squeezed state of light. Comparison to the unsubtracted statistics shows a successful photon subtraction and the expected shift by one photon number.

Photon-subtracted two-mode squeezed vacuum states and applications to quantum optical interferometry

Raul Carranza, Christopher C. Gerry

We study the application of photon-subtracted two-mode squeezed vacuum states (TMSVS), where identical photon numbers are subtracted from each beam, to the problem of quantum optical interferometry with the photon-number parity measurements scheme. Previously, Anisimov et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett.104, 103602 (2010)] have studied the prospect of using the TMSVS for parity measurements based interferometry. However, the joint photon number distribution of this state before beam splitting is thermal-like in each mode, meaning that its statistics are super-Poissonian and that the most probable state of the field is the double vacuum and that the average photon number is low. Furthermore, with these states the sensitivity of the phase-shift measurement is extremely sensitive to the size of the phase shift to be measured for large average photon numbers. The simultaneous subtraction of 1, 2, or 3 photons from each mode has the effects of increasing the average photon numbers of each mode and rendering the statistics nearly Poissonian and in some cases sub-Poissonian. We show that phase uncertainties for such states are less sensitive to the phase shift itself at large average photon numbers. We also show that the photon-subtracted TMSVS also lead to increased resolution.

Quantum Entanglement Based on Two-Photon Joint Subtraction from Two-Mode Squeezed Vacuum States

Hongbin Song, Heyu Huang, Hao Liu +3 more

We present and analyze the quantum entanglement generated from two-photon joint subtraction from two-mode squeezed vacuum states (TMSV). Larger entanglement negativity than single-photon jointly subtracted TMSV, photon-subtracted TMSV and TMSV is obtained when the squeezing parameter, ξ ≤ 0.58.

Photon Statistics of Photon-Added and Photon-Subtracted Two-Mode Squeezed Vacuum State

H. Lu

We introduce states a † m | ξ ⟩ and a m | ξ ⟩, where| ξ ⟩ is a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. We examine the properties of these states by analytic derivation. Because of the entanglement between the modes of the field, photon adding (or substracting) for one of the modes results in interesting outcomes. For a two-mode squeezed vacuum state, the effect of annihilation of m a-photons is just the same as creation of m b-photons. Annihilation of photons of mode a (or mode b ) actually increases the mean number of photons of mode a and mode b . We also calculate Mandel Q parameter, cross-correlation function and squeezing of the field.

Statistical properties and decoherence of two-mode photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum

Liyun Hu, Xue-Xiang, Hong-Yi Fan

We investigate the statistical properties of the photon-subtractions from the two-mode squeezed vacuum state and its decoherence in a thermal environment. It is found that the state can be considered as a squeezed two-variable Hermite polynomial excitation vacuum and the normalization of this state is the Jacobi polynomial of the squeezing parameter. The compact expression for Wigner function (WF) is also derived analytically by using the Weyl ordered operators' invariance under similar transformations. Especially, the nonclassicality is discussed in terms of the negativity of WF. The effect of decoherence on this state is then discussed by deriving the analytical time evolution results of WF. It is shown that the WF is always positive for any squeezing parameter and photon-subtraction number if the decay time exceeds an upper bound (}$κt>{1/2}\ln \frac{2\bar{n}+2}{2\bar{n}+1}).

We experimentally demonstrate that the simultaneous subtraction of photons from a two-mode squeezed vacuum state leads to the generation of entangled states with increasingly larger average photon number.

How subtraction of a single photon affects many quantum modes

Valentin Averchenko, Clément Jacquard, Valérian Thiel +2 more

The subtraction of a single photon from a multimode quantum field is analyzed as the conditional evolution of an open quantum system. We develop a theory describing different subtraction schemes in a unified approach and we introduce the concept of subtraction modes intrinsic to the process. The matching between the subtraction modes and the modes of the field defines different possible scenarios for the photon subtraction. In particular, our framework identifies: the conditions of pure photon subtraction, the quantum states of the field modes conditioned to the photon subtraction, the mode with the highest fidelity with a single-photon state when the subtraction is performed on multimode squeezed light. We use our theory to analyze the photon subtraction from a highly multimode quantum resource - a train of quantum squeezed or correlated optical pulses. Performing the photon subtraction optimally on various multimode light field has the potential to implement a number of quantum information protocols in a multiplexed and scalable way.
