Two-color multiphoton ionization and a numerical test of essential states theory

L. Roso, Joseph H. Eberly, Kazimierz Rza̧żewski

The various essential states (ES) models of multiphoton ionization (MPI) are the only models that permit an analytical solution for the temporal dynamics of MPI. One specific comparison of experimental data1 with ES predictions did not give good agreement. This may have been due to the simplifying assumptions of any essential states model or to the intrinsic difficulties of MPI spectroscopy. One of the important simplifications of ES models, the reliance on the rotating wave approximation (RWA) in the continuum, has recently been overcome.2

Multiphoton entanglement

Mohamed Bourennane, Manfred Eibl, Sascha Gaertner +4 more

Multiphoton entanglement is the basis of many quantum communication schemes, quantum cryptographic protocols, and fundamental tests of quantum theory. Spontaneous parametric down-conversion is the most effective source for polarization entangled photon pairs. Here we show, that a entangled 4-photon state can be directly created by parametric down-conversion. This state exhibit perfect quantum correlations and a high robustness of entanglement against photon loss. We have used this state for four-particle test of local realistic theories. Therefore this state can be used for new types of quantum communication. We also report on possibilities for the experimentally realization of a 3-photon entangled state, the so called W-state, and discuss some of its properties.

Experimental Test of Theories of the Detection Mechanism in a Nanowire Superconducting Single Photon Detector

J. J. Renema, Rosalinda Gaudio, Q Wang +8 more

We report an experimental test of the photodetection mechanism in a nanowire superconducting single photon detector. Detector tomography allows us to explore the 0.8-8 eV energy range via multiphoton excitations. High accuracy results enable a detailed comparison of the experimental data with theories for the mechanism of photon detection. We show that the temperature dependence of the efficiency of the superconducting single photon detector is determined not by the critical current but by the current associated with vortex unbinding. We find that both quasiparticle diffusion and vortices play a role in the detection event.
