Finite-temperature contact for a SU(2) Fermi gas trapped in a one-dimensional harmonic confinement

P. Capuzzi, Patrizia Vignolo

We calculate the finite-temperature Tan's contact for $N$ SU(2) fermions, characterized by repulsive contact interaction, trapped in a 1D harmonic confinement within a local density approximation on top of a thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The Tan's contact for such a system, as in the homogeneous case, displays a minimum at a very low temperature. By means of an exact canonical ensemble calculation for two fermions, we provide an explicit formula for the contact at very low temperatures that reveals that the minimum is due to the mixing of states with different exchange symmetries. In the unitary regime, this symmetry blending corresponds to a maximal entanglement entropy.

Thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional charged spin-1/2 Fermi gases

Jiaying Yang, Xu Liu, Jihong Qin +1 more

Based on the mean-field theory, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) charged spin-1/2 Fermi gas. Landé factor g is introduced to measure the strength of the paramagnetic effect. There is a competition between diamagnetism and paramagnetism in the system. The larger the Landé factor, the smaller the entropy and specific heat. Diamagnetism tends to increase the entropy, while paramagnetism leads to the decrease of the entropy. We find that there exists a critical value of Landé factor for the transition point due to the competition. The entropy of the system increases with the magnetic field when g < 0.58. With the growth of paramagnetism, when g > 0.58, the entropy first decreases with the magnetic field, then reaches a minimum value, and finally increases again. Both the entropy and specific heat increase with the temperature, and no phase transition occurs. The specific heat tends to a constant value at the high-temperature limit, and it approaches to zero at very low temperatures, which have been proved by the analytical calculation.

ENTROPY OF A TWO LEVEL ATOM IN CONTACT WITH A SQUEEZED RESERVOIR

Robert R. Tucci

We study the entropy of a two level atom in contact with a non-minimum uncertainty squeezed reservoir and a coherent drive. Let δ be the phase of the coherent drive, and ΩR/γ the Rabi frequency divided by the atomic decay rate. For large, near minimum uncertainty squeezing, we find that the atomic quantum state is approximately a pure state, or, equivalently, a minimum entropy state, if ΩR/γ and δ satisfy (ΩR/γ)| cos δ| = 1/2. (Previous workers have only noted the occurrence of a pure state at δ = 0 or 180°.) We find that the atom saturates separately in each quadrature of the coherent drive. We also find that the thermodynamic order of the atom (given by the magnitude of the Bloch vector or by the negative of the atomic entropy) may increase as the background fluctuations or disorder increase. This behavior does not occur with non-squeezed reservoirs; it may be interpreted as a negative temperature effect, if atomic temperatures are defined in terms of the derivatives of the atomic entropy with respect to the variances of the two reservoir quadratures. We give an extensive collection of plots of the atomic entropy and temperatures. We find that a harmonic oscillator always cools down to lower temperatures than a 2 level atom if both bodies are in contact with the same squeezed reservoir.
