Optical associative memory based on an echo correlator

Abstract

A physical principle of the associative-memory optical implementation by using the photon-echo effect is proposed. The properties inherent in this phenomenon permit an optical scheme similar to the nonlinear holographic associative memory [Appl. Opt. 26, 1900 (1987)] to be considered. The associative-memory system based on the photon-echo effect uses a temporal selectivity instead of a spatial one.

Storage and associative recall of images by stimulated photon echoes

Yong R. Kim

The photon echo is unique among nonlinear optical effects in that it involves interference and diffraction in both space and time domain. This intrinsic spatio-temporal property offers multitude of interesting and useful applications in optical storage and processing of temporally as well as spatially encoded data. In this paper we consider the possibility of using stimulated photon echo (SPE) to implement all-optical associative memory of spatial data.

Associative Memory Based on Nonlinear Optical Medium Properties

M. Belov, Edward A. Manykin

Nonlinear-medium properties are examined for optical implementation of an associative memory system. The approach based on these properties allows one to consider two cases of the optical associative memory: spatial pattern recognition and recognition of spectral distributions. The model proposed for this purpose permits nonlinearity in the correlation domain to be used to reduce cross-correlation noise.

Optical processing by using the two-pulse photon echo

Sergey M. Zakharov

Principles for analog and digital optical processing based on the two- pulse photon echo (PE) phenomenon are considered. Various architecture designs of optical pattern recognition systems and optical processors for analog and digital processing are discussed. Also various schemes of digital processors for vector-matrix multiplication with the pixel structure and of holographic type are suggested. These realizations depend on using of digital temporal or spatial mixed binary multiplication based on the PE.
