Abstract

We investigate theoretically different regimes of Dicke superradiance of an ensemble of three-level emitters (L configuration of the operating transitions) placed in a cyclic high-Q cavity. It is shown, that different regimes of three-level Dicke superradiance can be realized: regular dynamics, quasiperiodic and even chaotic behavior.

Cooperative emission from an ensemble of three-level Λ radiators in a cavity: An insight from the viewpoint of dynamics of nonlinear systems

Igor Viktorovich Ryzhov, N. A. Vasil’ev, I. S. Kosova +2 more

Cooperative radiation emitted by an ensemble of three-level optical systems with a doublet in the ground state (Λ scheme), which is placed into a cyclic cavity, is studied theoretically. In contrast to the two-level model of emitters, this process with such a configuration of operating transitions may occur without population inversion in the whole, if the doublet is prepared at the initial instant in a superposition (coherent) state. In the ideal case of a Hamilton system, in which the cavity losses and relaxation in the radiator ensemble are disregarded, the conservation laws are derived, which allow a substantial reduction of the dimension of the phase space of the model (ℝ 11 → ℝ 5 ) and the application of methods of dynamics of nonlinear systems for analyzing the three-level superradiance under these conditions. The possibility of different (both quasiperiodic and chaotic) scenarios of the three-level superradiance is demonstrated on the basis of Poincaré’s mappings. Global bifurcation of the system upon a transition from the conventional superradiance regime to inversionless one is revealed. The effects of cavity losses, as well as homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in the system of radiators on the regularities found are also discussed.

Dynamics of a generalized Dicke model for spin-1 atoms

Ofri Adiv, A. S. Parkins

The Dicke model is a staple of theoretical cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED), describing the interaction between an ensemble of atoms and a single radiation mode of an optical cavity. It is studied both quantum mechanically and semiclassically for two-level atoms, and demonstrates a rich variety of dynamics such as phase transitions, phase multistability, and chaos. In this work we explore an open, spin-1 Dicke model with independent co and counterrotating coupling terms as well as a quadratic Zeeman shift enabling control over the atomic energy-level structure. We investigate the stability of operator and moment equations under two approximations and show the system undergoes phase transitions. To compliment these results, we relax the aforementioned approximations and investigate the system semiclassically. We show evidence of phase transitions to steady-state and oscillatory superradiance in this semiclassical model, as well as the emergence of chaotic dynamics. The varied and complex behaviors admitted by the model highlights the need to more rigorously map its dynamics.

Hyperradiance from collective behavior of coherently driven atoms

Marc-Oliver Pleinert, Joachim von Zanthier, G. S. Agarwal

The collective behavior of ensembles of atoms has been studied in-depth since the seminal paper of Dicke [R. H. Dicke, Phys. Rev. 93, 99 (1954)], where he demonstrated that a group of emitters in collective states is able to radiate with increased intensity and modified decay rates in particular directions, a phenomenon which he called superradiance. Here, we show that the fundamental setup of two atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity can be distinctly exceeding the free-space superradiant behavior, a phenomenon which we call hyperradiance. The effect is accompanied by strong quantum fluctuations and surprisingly arises for atoms radiating out-of-phase, an alleged non-ideal condition, where one expects subradiance. We are able to explain the onset of hyperradiance in a transparent way by a photon cascade taking place among manifolds of Dicke states with different photon numbers under particular out-of-phase coupling conditions. The theoretical results can be realized with current technology and thus should stimulate future experiments.

Collective dynamics of the unbalanced three-level Dicke model

Jingtao Fan, Suotang Jia

We study a three-level Dicke model in V configuration under both closed and open conditions. With independently tunable corotating and counterrotating coupling strength of the interaction Hamiltonian, this model is a generalization of the standard Dicke model that features multiple distinct parameter regimes. Based on a mean-field approach and third quantization analysis, it is found that the system exhibits rich quantum phase behaviors, including distinct superradiant fixed points, multiphase coexistence, and limit-cycle oscillation. In particular, the cavity dissipation stabilizes a family of inverted spin-coherent steady states whose stability region can be enlarged or reduced by properly tuning the imbalance between the corotating and counterrotating interactions. This property provides a conceptually different scenario to prepare the coherent atomic state with high fidelity.

Analytical regularities of inversionless superradiance

Алиса Сергеевна Горбачева, Igor Viktorovich Ryzhov

The article reports the results of a theoretical study of superradiance of three-level optical systems with a doublet in the ground state (Λ-scheme) placed in a high-quality cavity. Hyperbolic chaos and unpredictable dynamic movements of the system appear on the surface of a multidimensional torus without dissipative losses in the conditions of superradiance without population inversion. The study resulted in the development of conservation laws to reduce the dimension of the phase space. An analytical result is obtained for the special case of a degenerate doublet.
