Abstract

The eigenvalue problem of a collision operator in a quantum kinetic equation for a momentum relaxation process of a one-dimenstional polaron system is considered. There appear an accumulation point and band structures in the spectrum of the collision operator.

Band structure and accumulation point in the spectrum of quantum collision operator in a one-dimensional molecular chain

Buang Ann Tay, Kazuki Kanki, Satoshi Tanaka +1 more

We consider the eigenvalue problem of a kinetic collision operator for a quantum Brownian particle interacting with a one-dimensional chain. The quantum nature of the system gives rise to a difference operator. For the one-dimensional case, the momentum space separates into infinite sets of disjoint subspaces dynamically independent of one another. The eigenvalue problem of the collision operator is solved with the continued fraction method. The spectrum is non-negative, possesses an accumulation point, and exhibits a band structure. We also construct the eigenvectors of the collision operator and establish their completeness and orthogonality relations in each momentum subspaces.

Transport Dynamics of a Large Acoustic Polaron in One Dimension

H.-B. Schüttler, Theodore D. Holstein

The transport dynamics of a large polaron has been studied in a one-dimensional system whose underlying vibrational spectrum is acoustic in character. Such a polaron moves as a heavy quasiparticle with transport relaxation time, $\ensuremath{\tau}$, determined mainly by collisions with thermally ambient phonons. Concrete results show that $\ensuremath{\tau}$ decreases monotonically with increasing temperature, in sharp contrast to the previously treated problem of a large polaron in a one-dimensional Einstein lattice.

Complex Spectral Representation of the Liouvillian and Kinetic Theory in Nonequilibrium Physics

Tomio Yamakoshi Petrosky

Kinetic theory in nonequilibrium statistical physics is discussed in terms of the complex spectral representation of the Liouvillian for quantum systems. We show that the collision operator appearing in the kinetic equation is the “self-energy part” of the Liouvillian. Solving the dispersion equation associated to the “self-energy part”, one can construct the resonance states of the Liouvillian which have complex eigenvalues. The imaginary part of the eigenvalue gives a decay rate in irreversible process in nonequilibrium statistical physics. As illustrations of the resonance states of the Liouvillian we consider two examples; one is a one-dimensional system in which a polaron is weakly interacting with a thermal reservoir consisting of an acoustic phonon field, and the other is a molecular chain that is described by the Davydov Hamiltonian, which has been introduced as a simple model that describes a protein chain. We show that the imaginary part of the spectrum of the Liouvillian in these systems has rich structures showing band structure, an accumulation point, and a fractal structure reminiscent of Hofstadter's butterfly.

Kinetic equations in polaron theory for the case of spatial inhomogeneity

Nikolai Nikolaevich Bogoliubov, A. A. Kasarian

Construction of a kinetic equation for a dynamical system interacting with a boson field in the case of spatial inhomogeneity is based on a method expounded in [1–3]. In the present article, it is shown that approaches considered in [1, 2] can be generalized for the case of spatial inhomogeneity. An arbitrary operator function that depends on the momentum and spatial variable is applied for derivation of a kinetic equation. We consider a method of studying an electron-phonon system by means of exclusion of boson operators from corresponding operator equations. In particular, interaction of an electron with a boson field is described by a kinetic equation for a polaron in the case of spatial inhomogeneity. In the relevant limit, a Boltzmann equation for the polaron is obtained.

Photoemission spectra of many-polaron systems

Martin Hohenadler, Danilo R. Neuber, Wolfgang von der Linden +3 more

The crossover from low to high carrier densities in a many-polaron system is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model, using unbiased numerical methods. Combining a novel quantum Monte Carlo approach and exact diagonalization, accurate results for the single-particle spectrum and the electronic kinetic energy on fairly large systems are obtained. A detailed investigation of the quality of the Monte Carlo data is presented. In the physically most important adiabatic intermediate electron-phonon coupling regime, for which no analytical results are available, we observe a dissociation of polarons with increasing band filling, leading to normal metallic behavior, while for parameters favoring small polarons, no such density-driven changes occur. The present work points toward the inadequacy of single-polaron theories for a number of polaronic materials such as the manganites.
