Correlations in a confined gas of harmonically interacting spin-polarized fermions

F. Brosens, J. T. Devreese, L. F. Lemmens

For a fermion gas with equally spaced energy levels, the density and the pair correlation function are obtained. The derivation is based on the path integral approach for identical particles and the inversion of the generating functions for both static responses. The density and the pair correlation function are evaluated explicitly in the ground state of a confined fermion system with a number of particles ranging from 1 to 220, and filling the Fermi level completely.

ON THE STATE OF A FERMI-SYSTEM WITH CORRELATION OF PAIRS OF PARTICLES WITH PARALLEL SPINS. I. GROUND--STATE

Zygmunt M. Galasiewicz

S>The solution of a compensation equation of dangerous graphs, for a system of interacting Fermi-particles, as an odd function of wave vectors is investigated. It is shown that this solution leads to the anomalous state, the energy of which is smaller than the energy of the normal state. The energy difference is equal to the binding energy of the pairs of fermions with parallel spin-moments. This anomalous state can exist in the presence of attractive Coulomb interactions. The elementary excitations are separated from the ground state by a gap the width of which depends on the direction of the wave vector. For the direction perpendicular to the spin direction, energy gap is zero and therefore the state cannot be superconducting. The binding energy of the pairs and the width of the energy gap are of the same order as in the theory based on the creation of pairs with antiparallel spin-moments, where in the expansion of the interaction term in spherical harmonics, the first coefficient is more than three times greater than the zero coefficient. In the absence of the magnetic field the total spin of a system is zero. In the presence of the magnetic field the total spinmore » differs from zero. The paramagnetic susceptibility is calculated. Energetic and structural properties of two-dimensional trapped mesoscopic Fermi gases

Emma Laird, Brendan C. Mulkerin, Jia Wang +1 more

We theoretically investigate equal-mass spin-balanced two-component Fermi gases in which pairs of atoms with opposite spins interact via a short-range isotropic model potential. We probe the distinction between two-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional harmonic confinement by tuning the effective range parameter within two-dimensional scattering theory. Our approach, which yields numerically exact energetic and structural properties, combines a correlated Gaussian basis-set expansion with the stochastic variational method. For systems containing up to six particles, we: 1) Present the ground- and excited-state energy spectra; 2) Study non-local correlations by analysing the one- and two-body density matrices, extracting from these the occupation numbers of natural orbitals, the momentum distributions of atoms and pairs, and the molecular `condensate fraction’; 3) Study local correlations by computing the radial and pair distribution functions. This paper extends current theoretical knowledge on the properties of trapped few-fermion systems as realised in state-of-the-art cold-atom experiments.
