U=∞ HUBBARD MODEL: TOWARDS THE EXACT SOLUTION IN d=∞

Abstract

We investigate the U=∞ Hubbard model. Using a Grassmann-integral representation, we transform this model to a Grassmann field theory with two degrees of freedom per site and with a local quartic interaction. An external inhomogeneous field is introduced so that the linked-cluster expansion be applicable. All 1-loop contributions from this expansion are summed up and an exact expression for the inhomogeneous grandcanonical potential dependent on the auxiliary external field in d=∞ is found.

Linked-cluster expansion around the atomic limit of the Hubbard model

Walter Metzner

We develop a perturbation expansion in the intersite hopping around the atomic limit of the Hubbard model. It is valid for arbitrary finite temperatures and interaction strengths. Diagrammatic rules that determine the grand-canonical potential and the Green's functions are derived. They reduce the calculation of any finite-order contribution to simple algebra. This opens the way for series extrapolations from computer-aided high-finite-order evaluations. Discrepancies in earlier expansions around the atomic limit are clarified. The present expansion scheme involves only connected diagrams with unrestricted lattice sums. This allows one to perform a vertex renormalization as for the linked-cluster expansion of the Ising model. The renormalized perturbation expansion can be used to construct self-consistent approximations which are automatically exact in the atomic limit. In the limit of high lattice dimensions, only fully two-particle reducible embeddings of diagrams on the lattice contribute. The single-particle properties of the infinite-dimensional Hubbard model reduce to those of independent tight-binding fermions hopping between dressed sites.

The Hubbard model in the canonical formulation

Urs Wenger, Sebastian Burri

We describe non-relativistic fermions on the lattice (Hubbard model) in the canonical formulation using transfer matrices in fixed fermion number sectors such that the partition function becomes fully factorized in time. By analytically integrating out the auxiliary Hubbard-Stratanovich field due to the four-fermion interaction, we express the system in terms of discrete, local fermion occupation numbers which are the only remaining degrees of freedom. We show the close relation to the fermion loop and the fermion bag formulation. One can prove that in 1+1 dimension the fermion sign problem is absent. Finally, we construct improved estimators for the ground state energy, 2-point functions, and for the chemical potential.

Solution of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for arbitrary electron density and largeU

J. M. P. Carmelo, D. Baeriswyl

The one-dimensional Hubbard model is studied for general electron densities and large U. On the basis of the coupled integral equations of Lieb and Wu exact asymptotic expansions are derived to fifth order in ${U}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ for the ground-state energy, the kinetic energy, and the number of doubly occupied sites. A closed-form expression for the distribution functions of charge and spin degrees of freedom is proposed which yields the same large-U expansion as that derived directly from the Lieb-Wu equations. Our analytical results are in excellent agreement with previous numerical studies.

Spectral moment sum rules for the retarded Green's function and self-energy of the inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in equilibrium and nonequilibrium

James K. Freericks, Volodymyr Turkowski, H. R. Krishnamurthy +1 more

We derive exact expressions for the zeroth and the first three spectral moment sum rules for the retarded Green's function and for the zeroth and the first spectral moment sum rules for the retarded self-energy of the inhomogeneous Bose-Hubbard model in nonequilibrium, when the local on-site repulsion and the chemical potential are time-dependent, and in the presence of an external time-dependent electromagnetic field. We also evaluate these expressions for the homogeneous case in equilibrium, where all time dependence and external fields vanish. Unlike similar sum rules for the Fermi-Hubbard model, in the Bose-Hubbard model case, the sum rules often depend on expectation values that cannot be determined simply from parameters in the Hamiltonian like the interaction strength and chemical potential but require knowledge of equal-time many-body expectation values from some other source. We show how one can approximately evaluate these expectation values for the Mott-insulating phase in a systematic strong-coupling expansion in powers of the hopping divided by the interaction. We compare the exact moment relations to the calculated moments of spectral functions determined from a variety of different numerical approximations and use them to benchmark their accuracy.

Extended Hubbard model in the presence of a magnetic field

Francesco Paolo Mancini, Francesco Paolo Mancini

Abstract. Within the Green’s function and equations of motion formalism it is possible to exactly solve a large class of models useful for the study of strongly correlated systems. Here, we present the exact solution of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with on-site U and first nearest neighbor repulsive V interactions in the presence of an external magnetic field h, in the narrow band limit. At zero temperature
