Continuous- and first-order phase transitions in Ising anti ferromagnets with next-nearest-neighbour interactions

Abstract

Both the square and triangular Ising antiferromagnetic systems with next-nearest neighbour interactions are studied by a new efficient entropic scheme. Using the energy distribution and order parameter's fourth order cumulant it is illustrated that the two models behave quite differently, For the square model we establish strong numerical evidence showing a continuous transition scaling, whereas for the triangular model a first-order transition is verified. Our results are compared with the existing predictions and controversies in the literature.

Non-universality in the Ising model with nearest and next-nearest neighbour interactions

Michael N. Barber

The critical behaviour of the Ising model on the square lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbour interactions (J) and anti-ferromagnetic next-nearest neighbour interactions (J') is discussed for small lambda =J/ mod J' mod . The singular part of the free energy is calculated to second order in lambda by perturbation theory. Near the critical temperature of the unperturbed system (J=0), this expansion is found to have a form which may be exponentiated yielding, for non-zero lambda , a non-universal critical line along which the exponents vary continuously with lambda . For small lambda , the specific heat exponent, alpha = alpha 1 lambda 2 +O( lambda 2 ) with alpha 1 approximately=1.5.

Determination of the Critical Points of Antiferromagnetic Ising Model with Next Nearest Neighbour Interactions on the Triangular Lattice

Seiji Miyashita, Hidetsugu Kitatani, Yasumasa Kanada

Positions of critical temperatures of antiferromagnetic Ising model with ferromagnetic next nearest neighbour interactions on the triangular lattice are investigated by making use of their properties of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type of phase transition. In particular, finite-size scaling method and Monte Carlo Renormalization Group methods (MCRG) with flow diagrams of the anomalous dimension η show the fixed line structure where the correlation length diverges. Another MCRG with flow diagram of the stiffness constant also shows a critical property clearly. The temperature dependence of the long range order is also discussed in order to locate the lower critical point.

A Monte Carlo and renormalization group study of the Ising model with nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions on the triangular lattice

James N. Glosli, Michael Plischke

The Ising model with nearest and next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions on the triangular lattice displays, for Jnnn/Jnn = 0.1, three phase transitions in different universality classes as the magnetic field is increased. We have studied this model using Monte Carlo and renormalization group techniques. The transition from the paramagnetic to the 2 × 1 phase (universality class of the Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy) is found to be first order; the transition from the paramagnetic phase to the [Formula: see text] phase (universality class of the three state Potts model) is continuous; and the transition from the paramagnetic to the 2 × 2 phase (universality class of the four state Potts model) is found to change from first order to continuous as the field is increased. We have mapped out the phase diagram and determined the critical exponents for the continuous transitions. A novel technique, using a Landau-like free energy functional determined from Monte Carlo calculations, to distinguish between first order and continuous transitions, is described.

A first-order phase transition in the three-dimensional four-state antiferromagnetic Potts model

A Yamagata

Studies the four-state antiferromagnetic Potts model with next-nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic interactions on the simple cubic lattice by the Monte Carlo method. The ratio J 2 /J 1 of the strength of the next-nearest-neighbour interactions to that of the nearest-neighbour interactions is to be 10. The author analyses the finite-size effects of the energy, the specific heat, the fourth-order cumulant, the magnetization, the susceptibility and the effective transition temperatures. With the help of the finite-size scaling theory the author concludes that the transition of the model is assigned to be of first order.

Phase diagrams and critical behavior of Ising square lattices with nearest-, next-nearest-, and third-nearest-neighbor couplings

D. P. Landau, Kurt Binder

Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the location and nature of phase boundaries for Ising square lattices with antiferromagnetic coupling ${J}_{\mathrm{NN}}$ between nearest neighbors and additional interactions ${J}_{\mathrm{NNN}}$ between next-nearest neighbors and ${J}_{3\mathrm{N}\mathrm{N}}$ between third-nearest neighbors. Results in zero magnetic field are obtained for a wide range of R=${J}_{\mathrm{NNN}/{J}_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ and R'=${J}_{3\mathrm{N}\mathrm{N}/{J}_{\mathrm{NN}}}$. In addition to the c(2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2) and (2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1) phases, which also occur for R'=0, we find new (4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4) and (4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2) ordered states, for R'\ensuremath{\ne}0, which are separated from the disordered state by lines of first-order transitions. The nonuniversal critical behavior of the (2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1) phase is studied using the block-distribution method and finite-size scaling. The possible existence of incommensurate phases is also explored.

Critical behaviour of the ferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice

Luo Zhi-Huan, Loan Mushtaq, Liu Yan +1 more

We use a new updated algorithm scheme to investigate the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice with the nearest neighbour interactions. The transition is examined by generating accurate data for lattices with L = 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50. The updated spin algorithm we employ has the advantages of both a Metropolis algorithm and a single-update method. Our study indicates that the transition is continuous at T c = 3.6403(2). A convincing finite-size scaling analysis of the model yields ν = 0.9995(21), β/ν = 0.12400(17), γ/ν = 1.75223(22), γ'/ν = 1.7555(22), α/ν = 0.00077(420) (scaling) and α/ν = 0.0010(42) (hyperscaling). The present scheme yields more accurate estimates for all the critical exponents than the Monte Carlo method, and our estimates are shown to be in excellent agreement with their predicted values.
