Novel optical CDMA platform for avionics applications

Ivan Glesk, Paul R. Prucnal

We designed, built, and demonstrated a highly scalable incoherent Optical CDMA testbed under DARPA contract as a novel platform for testing different avionics applications which will be characterized by Lockheed Martin. It enables users to communicate with each other at the OC-24 rate of ~1.25 Gbit/sec per user with raw BER of less than 10-12. The system architecture uses (3,11) fast wavelength-hopping, time-spreading prime codes with a chip size of 73 ps utilizing standard on-off-keyed picosecond optical pulses allocated in the time and wavelength domains. A novel design of optical encoders and decoders enables the realization of a secure connectivity approaching a so called "one-time-pad" security. The testbed is also designed to conduct eavesdropping studies among testbed users.

Novel Secure Platform for Avionic Applications Based on Optical CDMA

Ivan Glesk, Y-K. Huang, Brian L. Uhlhorn +1 more

We designed, built, and demonstrated a novel optical CDMA-based platform running at OC-24 data rate, with three users and one eavesdropper. Error-free operation with BER better than 10-12was achieved. Based on our simulations, the testbed can support ten simultaneous users with BER-9. Novel "dual-code" OCDMA transmitter and receiver were designed and demonstrated to deliver more secure data transmission approaching One-time Pad security by implementing optical layer XOR and having the capability to perform bit-to-bit code swapping. The testbed was developed under DARPA contract and delivered to Lockheed Martin for further performance evaluations in different avionic applications.

Demonstration of Record BER and Number of Users for Optical CDMA (O-CDMA), with Implications to Secure Communications

We demonstrate a BER of 10{sup -11} for 16 simultaneous users, using wavelength/time O-CDMA. We show the extent to which severe multi-access interference can be used to mask and/or degrade the signal from an intruder.
