Abstract

The high-resolution rovibronic spectroscopies of cold and ultracold molecules (e.g. supersonic molecular beam excitation spectra (MB), photoassociation spectra of ultracold atoms (PA), resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra (REMPI), stimulated Raman transfer (SRT) spectra) are of major current interest. This manuscript summarizes the significant level of understanding of these various spectroscopies, enabled by using simple graphical and semiclassical ideas and shortcuts. Physical realizations of these spectroscopies will be illustrated using the alkali metal diatomic molecules, both homonuclear (e.g. Rb2) and heteronuclear (e.g. KRb).

Spectroscopy of ultracold LiRb molecules using ionization detection

Adeel Altaf

We present spectroscopic studies of ultracold LiRb molecules using ionization detection. The molecules are created by cooling and trapping Li and Rb atoms in overlapping magneto-optical traps (MOTs) and using light resonant with a free-bound transition to create weakly bound excited state molecules in a process known as photoassociation (PA). We explore weakly bound vibrational levels of LiRb with PA spectroscopy using ionization detection and, where possible, compare our results with earlier measurements performed in our lab using trap-loss spectroscopy. In addition, we also probe vibrational levels of the ground triplet electronic state and excited electronic states using resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy. We identify several vibrational levels of the α3Σ+, (3)3ΠΩ and (4)3Σ + states and compare our observations with theoretical calculations. As LiRb is one of the least studied heteronuclear diatomic molecules, these studies are aimed towards exploring the molecular structure. The spectroscopic work is also in line with the long-term project goals of transferring ultracold LiRb molecules into the lowest rotational and vibrational levels of the ground singlet electronic state. Molecules in this rovibronic ground state possess a large electric dipole moment, which is essential for application of ultracold molecules in various quantum computation schemes. The rovibronic ground state will also be an ideal starting point for investigating molecular entangled states.

Analysis of the Alkali Metal Diatomic Spectra

Jin‐Tae Kim, Bongsoo Kim, William C. Stwalley

This ebook illustrates the complementarity of molecular beam (MB) spectra and ultracold molecule (UM) spectra in unraveling the complex electronic spectra of diatomic alkali metal molecules, using KRb as a prime example. Researchers interested in molecular spectroscopy, whether physicist, chemist, or engineer, may find this ebook helpful and may be able to apply similar ideas to their molecules of interest.

Ultracold photoassociative spectroscopy of heteronuclear alkali-metal diatomic molecules

He Wang, William C. Stwalley

We have examined and identified the excited long-range Hund’s case (c) molecular states of the ten heteronuclear alkali metal diatomic molecules which support bound states and can be probed by ultracold photoassociative spectroscopy. Analytical expressions for the heteronuclear long-range free-bound Franck–Condon factors as a function of the internuclear distance R and the vibrational quantum number v are derived and discussed. The KRb system has considerably stronger excited long-range interactions than any other heteronuclear alkali diatomic molecule and has very favorable Franck–Condon factors for the photoassociation process. The heteronuclear photoassociative spectroscopy will provide spectroscopic measurements of the binary elastic scattering lengths of heteronuclear cold collisions which are the crucial parameters for sympathetic cooling of mixed atomic gases.

Resonant Coupling in the Heteronuclear Alkali Dimers for Direct Photoassociative Formation of X(0,0) Ultracold Molecules

William C. Stwalley, J. Raymajumder, Michael Bellos +3 more

Promising pathways for photoassociative formation of ultracold heteronuclear alkali metal dimers in their lowest rovibronic levels (denoted X(0,0)) are examined using high quality ab initio calculations of potential energy curves currently available. A promising pathway for KRb, involving the resonant coupling of the 2 1 Π and 1 1 Π states just below the lowest excited asymptote (K(4s)+Rb(5p1/2)), is found to occur also for RbCs and less promisingly for KCs as well. The resonant coupling of the 3 1 Σ + and 1 1 Π states, also just below the lowest excited asymptote, is found to be promising for LiNa, LiK, LiRb, and less promising for LiCs and KCs. Direct photoassociation to the 11Π state near dissociation appears promising in the final dimers, NaK, NaRb, and NaCs, although detuning more than 100 cm−1 below the Research with ultracold atoms has been an amazingly fruitful area of frontier

Vibronic transitions in the alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb) – alkaline-earth-metal (Ca, Sr) series: A systematic analysis of de-excitation mechanisms based on the graphical mapping of Frank-Condon integrals

Johann Valentin Pototschnig, Ralf Meyer, Andreas W. Hauser +1 more

Research on ultracold molecules has seen a growing interest recently in the context of high-resolution spectroscopy and quantum computation. After forming weakly bound molecules from atoms in cold collisions, the preparation of molecules in low vibrational levels of the ground state is experimentally challenging, and typically achieved by population transfer using excited electronic states. Accurate potential energy surfaces are needed for a correct description of processes such as the coherent de-excitation from the highest and therefore weakly bound vibrational levels in the electronic ground state via couplings to electronically excited states. This paper is dedicated to the vibrational analysis of potentially relevant electronically excited states in the alkali-metal (Li, Na, K, Rb)-- alkaline-earth metal (Ca,Sr) diatomic series. Graphical maps of Frank-Condon overlap integrals are presented for all molecules of the group. By comparison to overlap graphics produced for idealized potential surfaces, we judge the usability of the selected states for future experiments on laser-enhanced molecular formation from mixtures of quantum degenerate gases.
