Universal scaling of resonances in vector correlation photoionization parameters

Abstract

In the present work it is shown that in atomic photoionization the Fano-like behaviour of vector correlation parameters in the region of an isolated autoionizing resonance possesses two universal values: the width and the energy shift with respect to the energy of the autoionizing state. This property is confirmed by fluorescence polarimetry studies, which provide, in the particular case of Xe 4d−15/26p (J = 1) photoexcitation, the experimental determination of the alignment and the orientation of the final photoion across the resonance. 1.

Angular correlation measurement between the photo-excited autoionized electron and subsequent polarized fluorescent photon at an autoionization resonance of Sr

J. B. West, Kevin J. Ross, Kiyoshi Ueda +1 more

We demonstrate that the technique of measuring the angular correlation between the photoejected electron and polarized fluorescent photon can be used to determine all the photoionization parameters for the relativistic case. Applying this technique to an autoionization resonance of atomic Sr, values were obtained for the ratios of the three dipole amplitudes and the two phase differences.

The Excited Helium Photoionization

O Lhagva, S. Danzan

The photoionization characteristic behaviour of the excited He atom has been studied by using the parametrical approach, and the physical nature of the processes is cleared up. It is shown that in the excited He photoionization, the profiles of the resonance structures appear far enough from the positions of autoionization states at energies comparable hundred times of their natural widths. The mentioned peculiarities in the recombination of the He+ ioninto excited states have been observed too. It is also shown that such "extended" resonance structures are well described by "width" and "profile" functions of the energy. The competition and interference of phototransitions to open and closed (autoionization resonance) channels are found to be due to the broadening and shift in the resonance structure profile formed in the photoprocesses with the excited He. The ways to revealexperimentally the influence of closed channels in the resonance structure forming the photoprocesses with excited He atoms are discussed.

Path dependence in resonant multiphoton excitation to autoionizing states of barium

James S. Keller, John E. Hunter, R. Stephen Berry

We measure photoion spectra and angular distributions of photoelectrons from the two-color, two-photon resonant ionization of barium atoms in order to probe the effect of the photoionization pathway on autoionization processes. The (6s6p${)}^{1}$P${\mathrm{\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}}}_{1}$ and the (5d6p${)}^{1}$P${\mathrm{\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}}}_{1}$ states are used as intermediates in the photoexcitation of barium to energies in the range of a series of 5dnd autoionizing states. Dramatic differences in the profiles of autoionizing lines are observed for excitation pathways involving different intermediate states. Angular distributions of photoelectrons collected across the range of autoionizing resonances demonstrate strong variations that follow constraints imposed by the angular momentum of the autoionizing peaks and also suggest significant spin-orbit interactions in the photoionization step.

Photoionization of Synchrotron-Radiation-Excited Atoms: Separating Partial Cross Sections by Full Polarization Control

Stéphane Aloïse, Patrick O’Keeffe, D. Cubaynes +2 more

Resonant atomic excitation by synchrotron radiation and subsequent ionization by a tunable dye laser is used to study the photoionization of short-lived Rydberg states in Xe. By combining circular and linear polarization of the synchrotron as well as of the laser photons the partial photoionization cross sections were separated in the region of overlapping autoionizing resonances of different symmetry and the parameters of the resonances were extracted.

Resonance profiles for electron-ion photorecombination at an isolated resonance

Stanley L. Haan

A projection-operator formalism is employed in studying photorecombination at energies close to an autoionizing resonance. A resonance profile is defined, and is presented without approximation for a model system consisting of one electron continuum, one autoionizing state, and one final radiatively stabilized atomic state. Effective line-profile parameters \ensuremath{\varepsilon}^ and q^ are defined, and the photorecombination resonance profile is shown to be the same as the photoionization resonance profile (for the process in which initial and final atomic states are interchanged from the photorecombination process), provided one-photon spontaneous radiative decay effects are included. The effective line-profile parameters are examined, and are shown to reduce to the standard autoionization line-profile parameters in the limit of no spontaneous radiative decay. Effective line-profile parameters are also defined in the pole approximation for two model systems featuring an isolated autoionizing state. Comparison is made with effective line-profile parameters that have been defined elsewhere in the context of photoionization into coupled electron-continuum channels. The similarity in mathematical formalism for systems supporting multiple continua, regardless of whether these continua are electron or photon continua, is discussed.

Igor M. Beterov, U. V. Brjzazovsky, V. L. Kurochkin +3 more

The results of multiphoton ionization of the Yb atoms in a long atomic beam near the autoionization (AI) level 4f136p26s and determination of the Fano parameters of AI resonance are reported. The possibility of the amplification without inversion producing near the AI Yb atom levels is analyzed.
