Abstract

We observed that the spatial distortions of a probe pulse from Kerr nonlinearity were eliminated almost perfectly when a strong coupling pulse copropagates with the probe on two-photon-resonance in /spl Lambda/-type 3 levels of atomic Sm.

Electromagnetically induced focusing in a Λ-type medium

Gong Shang-Qing, Zhizhan Xu, Pan Shao-hua

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogenously broadened medium consisting of Λ-type three-level atoms has been analyzed. It is shown that the Λ system can induce a transparency of the medium when the probe laser and the coupling laser have the same frequency detunings (including zero). Across the EIT window, the radial variation of the strong coupling laser radiation may lead to electromagnetically induced focusing or defocusing of the weak probe laser at separate probe frequency detuning points.

We show that the giant Kerr nonlinearity in the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency in vapor can give rise to the formation of Thirring-type spatial solitons, which are supported solely by cross-phase modulation that couples the two copropagating light beams.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le, Ngoc Sau Vu +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. Spatial Consequences of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency: Observation of Electromagnetically Induced Focusing

Richard R. Moseley, Sara Shepherd, David J. Fulton +2 more

Within an experiment to produce electromagnetically induced transparency the radial intensity profile of the strong coupling laser can generate a significant spatial refractive index profile which is experienced by the weak probe laser as it tunes through the transparency window. This can lead to focusing and defocusing at separate, but close, probe laser detunings. This behavior is observed using continuous-wave lasers in rubidium vapor, in agreement with our predictions.

Self-induced transparency has been observed for the degenerate, $F=3\ensuremath{\rightarrow}4$, hyperfine component of the 1.315-\ensuremath{\mu}m magnetic dipole transition of atomic iodine, at high optical power levels, up to 50 MW ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$. For pulse areas approaching $2\ensuremath{\pi}$, the dynamics of the strong coherent resonant self-focusing which accompanies self-induced transparency have been studied with a streak camera to provide time-dependent analysis of the spatial beam profile.
