Energy Density and Current in Quantum Theory

Abstract

The concepts of energy density and energy current density for a single particle in nonrelativistic quantum theory are discussed. It is shown that the energy density ε and the energy current density Q are related by the equation (δε/δt)+∇·Q = S, where S represents external power sources.

Currents as Coordinates in Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics

WILLIAM J. PARDEE, Leonard Schlessinger, Jon Wright

The formulation of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics using currents and densities as coordinates is investigated. A general solution for a single-particle theory is presented, and several many-body problems are discussed.

Transverse current density in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics

Ole Keller

We have seen that the source domain of a transverse photon, a quantum physical object described in this book via the transverse part of the vector potential (AT (r, t)), may be identified with the transverse part of the charged-particle current density (JT (r, t)). In general, many-body quantum physics is needed to determine JT (r, t). However, it is possible to illustrate a number of important principles related to the characterization of the photon source domain by limiting oneself to a study of the single-particle (electron) current density concept in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics.

The Hamiltonian of Quantum Electronics

J. Savolainen, Stig Stenholm

This paper discusses the quantization of electromagnetic fields interacting with nonrelativistic atoms and molecules in the dipole approximation. Quantizing the field variables D and H and taking the interaction density −ε0−1P·D, we obtain a quantum theory corresponding to classical electrodynamics with no free currents and the induced dipole moments as the only sources of the radiation field. The resulting equations are found to agree with those Power and Zienau obtained from causality requirements. A comparison with the conventional approach is given.

Local energy and power in many-particle quantum systems driven by an external electrical field

Guillermo Albareda, Fabio L. Traversa, Xavier Oriols

Abstract We derive expressions for the expectation values of the local energy and the local power for a many-particle system of (scalar) charged particles interacting with an external electrical field. In analogy with the definition of the (local) current probability density, we construct a local energy operator such that the time-rate of change of its expectation value provides information on the spatial distribution of power. Results are presented as functions of an arbitrarily small volume Ω , and physical insights are discussed by means of the quantum hydrodynamical representation of the wavefunction, which is proven to allow for a clear-cut separation into contributions with and without classical correspondence. Quantum features of the local power are mainly manifested through the presence of non-local sources/sinks of power and through the action of forces with no classical counterpart. Many-particle classical-like effects arise in the form of current-force correlations and through the inflow/outflow of energy across the boundaries of the volume Ω . Interestingly, all these intriguing features are only reflected in the expression of the local power when the volume Ω is finite. Otherwise, for closed systems with Ω → ∞ , we recover a classical-like single-particle expression.

Quantum power functional theory for many-body dynamics

Matthias Schmidt

We construct a one-body variational theory for the time evolution of nonrelativistic quantum many-body systems. The position- and time-dependent one-body density, particle current, and time derivative of the current act as three variational fields. The generating (power rate) functional is minimized by the true current time derivative. The corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, together with the continuity equation for the density, forms a closed set of one-body equations of motion. Space- and time-nonlocal one-body forces are generated by the superadiabatic contribution to the functional. The theory applies to many-electron systems.

The quantum mechanical probability density and probability current density operators in the Pauli theory

E. L. Rumyantsev, P. E. Kunavin

We present systematic construction of probability and probability current densities operators for one-band single particle Pauli equations starting from the operators in Dirac electron model within Second Quantized Approach. These operators are of importance as in probability interpretation of experimental data, so in establishing of boundary conditions. It is shown that derived operators differ significally from their convential Schrodinger-type counterparts. The generalization of continuity equation for probability density under external perturbations and physical meaning of additional source terms is discussed. The presented approach can be useful in analysis of carriers dynamics described within generic multicomponent $\vec{k} \cdot \vec{p}$ Hamiltonians in Envelope Function Approximation (EFA).
