EFFECTIVE LAGRANGIAN, CASIMIR ENERGY AND CONFORMAL FIELD THEORY DESCRIPTION OF THE QUANTUM HALL EFFECT

Abstract

By using the Girvin–MacDonald effective Lagrangian for the Hall fluid system at filling ν = 1 we are able to evaluate the ground-state energy for a cylinder of infinite length. That is done by using the topological properties of the edge vacuum in the thermodynamic limit, Ne → ∞, ν = 1 fixed, From the vacuum energy we extract the value of the Casimir energy for both filling ν = 1 and ν = 1/m. The results obtained fix the central charge c of the underlying 2D Conformal Field Theory at c = 1. This correspondence is further analyzed by using the bosonic realization of the Kac–Moody algebra on the edge vacuum. Then the off-diagonal long-range order of the effective theory can be seen as an equivalent description of the topological order typical of the 2D CFT.

A Unifying Conformal Field Theory Approach to the Quantum Hall Effect

Gerardo Cristofano, G. Maiella, Vincenzo Marotta +2 more

We review the main results of the effective description of the Quantum Hall fluid for the Jain fillings, nu=m/2pm+1, and the non-standard ones nu=m/pm+2 by a conformal field theory (CFT) in two dimensions. It is stressed the unifying character of the m-reduction procedure to construct appropriate twisted CFT models, called Twisted Models (TM), which by construction reproduce the Quantum Hall topological properties at those fillings. Indeed for the Jain plateaux we find that the different descriptions given in the literature fall into different sectors of the TM for the torus topology. Other interesting aspects are explicitly seen for the m=2 non standard filling nu=1/p+1 (the pairing case) as the merging of non-Abelian statistics or the instability of the TM model (c=2) versus the Moore-Read one (c=3/2). Furthermore by using Boundary CFT techniques the presence of localized impurities and/or dissipation is shown to be closely connected with the twisted sector of the TM, whose presence assures the consistency of the construction and whose role in describing non trivial global properties of 2D quantum condensed matter systems is still under study.

A CONFORMAL FIELD THEORY DESCRIPTION OF THE PAIRED AND PARAFERMIONIC STATES IN THE QUANTUM HALL EFFECT

Gerardo Cristofano, GIUSEPPE MAIELLA, VINCENZO MAROTTA

We extend the construction of the effective conformal field theory for the Jain hierarchical fillings proposed in Ref. 1 to the description of a quantum Hall fluid at nonstandard fillings [Formula: see text]. The chiral primary fields are found by using a procedure which induces twisted boundary conditions on the m scalar fields; they appear as composite operators of a charged and neutral component. The neutral modes describe parafermions and contribute to the ground state wave function with a generalized Pfaffian term. Correlators of Ne electrons in the presence of quasi-hole excitations are explicitly given for m=2.

Conformal field theory approach to gapless 1D fermion systems and application to the edge excitations of nu = 1/(2p+1) quantum Hall sequences

Pascal Degiovanni, C. Chaubet, R. Mélin

We present a comprehensive study of the effective Conformal Field Theory (CFT) describing the low energy excitations of a gas of spinless interacting fermions on a circle in the gapless regime (Luttinger liquid). Functional techniques and modular transformation properties are used to compute all correlation functions in a finite size and at finite temperature. Forward scattering disorder is treated exactly. Laughlin experiments on charge transport in a Quantum Hall Fluid on a cylinder are reviewed within this CFT framework. Edge excitations above a given bulk excitation are described by a twisted version of the Luttinger effective theory. Luttinger CFTs corresponding to the nu =1/(2p+1) filling fractions appear to be rational CFTs (RCFT). Generators of the extended symmetry algebra are identified as edge fermions creators and annihilators, thus giving a physical meaning to the RCFT point of view on edge excitations of these sequences.

Study of Quantum Hall Effect and Its Relation to Conformal Field Theory

Shima Bahrampour Lomer, M. N. Najafi, Hosein Mohammadzadeh

The quantum Hall effect is one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter physics in which many rare physical phenomena like fractional charges and generally the fractional statistics are involved. In the integer quantum Hall effect the role of the disorder is more than others. The important point in describing these systems is that their bulk states should be gapful and in this sense the system should be incompressible. For describing the electron condensates in an arbitrary filling fraction with the odd denominator one needs the topological U(1) Chern-Simons effective field theory. Our motivation for using these field theories is the emergence of quantized conductivity. This effective field theory also has the ability of constructing the hierarchical fractional condensates with various filling factors. The excitations of these theories have fractional statistics which are investigated in this review. The non-Abelian Chern-Simons for quantum Hall systems will be also investigated. The interesting point is that the edge states of these systems are gapless and their excitations are equipped with the Kac-Moody algebra. The connection to the conformal field theories can be established using this point. The investigation of this correspondence is one of the aims of the present thesis. The connection to the logarithmic conformal field theories (e.g. for the Haldane-Rezaei wave function) is also reported in some works which will be addressed in this thesis.

Topological fluids

Eduardo Fradkin

In this chapter we will develop the effective-field theory of topological fluids, focusing on the fractional quantum Hall states as the prototype. Quantum Hall fluids on a torus Quantum Hall states are topological electron fluids whose properties depend on the topology of the surface on which the electrons are bound. In this section we will discuss the case of a fluid confined to a 2D torus. Although considering a 2D electron gas on a torus is of little experimental value, it is a great conceptual (and numerical) tool. For the Laughlin states we have discussed there is the implicit assumption that the electrons are confined in a simply connected region of the plane by an external confining potential. Thus, the surface on which the electrons live has the topology of a disk or, which is equivalent, a sphere. In this geometry the ground state is unique. In Section 12.7 we discussed the state of a free-fermion system on a torus with filling factor ν = 1 (a full Landau level), and we showed that the ground state on a torus is also unique. The reason for this is that the filling factor is 1. Thus, in a translationally invariant system the motion of the center of mass of the electron fluid decouples from the relative motion of the electrons in the fluid. The motion of the center of mass is that of a single particle moving in a magnetic field with one flux quantum. Thus the state is unique.

The subject of this work is the application of conformal field theory in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The fractional quantum Hall effect is observed in a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong perpendicular magnetic field and at low temperature. The electron system forms a strongly correlated quantum liquid and exhibits the exact quantization of the Hall conductivity in to a fractional value vet/h, where v is the fractional filling fraction of Landau-levels in the system. In addition, the elementary excitations of the electron fluid have fractional charge and fractional statistics of anyons. First, we review the basic of two-dimensional conformal field theory and show how certain conformal quantum field theories can be solved non-perturbatively by using the representation theory of conformal symmetries. The low-energy effective field theory in the bulk of a fractional quantum Hall state is known to be a 2+1 dimensional topological field theory. The states of the topological quantum field theory are directly connected to the holomorphic correlation functions of an equivalent two-dimensional conformal field theory. It is known that the gapless excitations at the boundary of the quantum Hall state are described by the same conformal field theory. By using this connection, the so-called Laughlin and Moore-Read states are derived in detail using conformal field theory. The fractional charge and statistics of the quasiparticle excitations in these states are obtained from the conformal field theory description. Furthermore, the non-Abelian statistics of the Moore-Read states are verified explicitly from the quasiparticle wave functions. We argue how the different fractional quantum Hall phases of matter are described by the quantum numbers obtained using conformal field theory. Lastly, we study model interactions that have the Laughlin v = 1/3 and the Moore-Read v = 1/2 states as exact ground states. We compute the matrix elements of these interactions and diagonalize the Hamiltonian matrix in the disk geometry for both states. The low-energy edge excitations of these states are studied in the finite geometry and we verify that they are in accordance with the conformal field theory on the boundary. By creating a localized density disturbance in the system, we create the e/4 quasiparticle of the Moore-Read state, and by studying the properties of the edge theory it is seen that quasiparticle has the same properties as the non-Abelian quasihole in the conformal field theory. The obtained results verify the correspondence between the bulk state and the boundary conformal field theory at the edge in the fractional quantum Hall states in question.
