Bistability and hysteresis phenomena in an optical parametric oscillator

Abstract

Abstract The optical parametric oscillator involving the analogue of the inverse Čerenkov effect is considered for the case when the pumping (with a frequency ωp) consists of two plane waves incident at two different angles onto an optical waveguide (terminated by mirrors). Here, a bistability of the oscillator output emission (with frequencies ωs, ωv satisfying the relation ωs + ωr = ωp) and hysteresis phenomena caused by the bistability are shown to be realized. Also, bistability and hysteresis phenomena are shown to appear in the weaves with the frequency ωp reflected from (transmitted through) the waveguide layer, and in the waves with new frequencies 2ωs, 2ωr which are due to the transformation of the pumping in the waveguide layer.

Bistability and self-pulsing in Cerenkov-type optical parametric interactions

V. N. Lugovoǐ

A Cerenkov-type optical parametric oscillator exhibiting optical bistability, hysteresis, self-pulsing, and other effects is discussed. Noteworthy are a low threshold intensity of the pumping beam and a short characteristic time of the relaxation to steady-state light oscillations in the oscillator.

Spatial hysteresis and switching waves in a nonlinear planar waveguide

Vladimir Yu. Bazhenov, M. S. Soskin, V. B. Taranenko

An experimental investigation was made of the transformation of the intensity profile of a spatially confined light beam reflected from a nonlinear planar waveguide. It was found that when the system exhibited optical bistability, a hysteresis of the intensity profile was observed and it was due to the formation and propagation of a switching wave in the waveguide layer. A hysteresis was also observed when a switching wave crossed the unilluminated part of the waveguide layer.

Parametric oscillation in semiconductor microcavities: nonlinear and quantum effects

Jean‐Philippe Karr, A. Baas, Marco Romanelli +2 more

Abstract We report the observation of optical bistability in a semiconductor microcavity pumped at the “magic angle” above the parametric oscillation threshold. Experimental evidence is given in the form of a hysteresis cycle of the nonlinear emission as a function of the pump intensity. A model analogous to those developped for triply resonant Optical Parametric Oscillators (OPO) is in good agreement with the experimental findings. In the second part, we study the potential application of the parametric oscillation regime to quantum optics. The quantum correlations between the emitted “signal” and “idler” beams are computed. We show that very strong quantum correlations between the signal and idler polaritons can be achieved. However the quantum effects in the outgoing light fields are strongly reduced due to the large mismatch in the coupling of the signal and idler polaritons to the external photons. Optical bistability in semiconductor microcavities in the nondegenerate parametric oscillation regime: Analogy with the optical parametric oscillator

A. Baas, Jean‐Philippe Karr, Marco Romanelli +2 more

We report the observation of optical bistability in a microcavity pumped resonantly close to the inflection point of the lower polariton dispersion. Experimental evidence is given in the form of a hysteresis cycle of the nonlinear emission as a function of the pump intensity or the position of the excitation spot. The results can be well understood with simple theoretical considerations that underline the fundamental analogy between our system and an optical parametric oscillator.

Parametric oscillation in four-wave mixing with nondegenerate pumping

Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan, K. G. Petrosyan, Karen V. Kheruntsyan

A theoretical investigation is made of parametric generation of light by four-wave mixing in an optical cavity with two pump fields of different frequencies. Mixing configurations resulting in the excitation of one and three cavity modes are considered taking into account the effects of phase modulation and of depletion of the pump fields. An analysis is made of stable steady-state oscillation regimes. Calculations are reported of the intensities of the generated radiation modes at the exit from the cavity above the threshold. An analysis is made of the conditions for the appearance of optical bistability at nonzero values of the cavity detuning.

Bistability of second harmonic generation in optical waveguides with depletion of the pump field

M. Nevière, E. Popov, R. Reinisch

The paper is concerned with second harmonic generation in optical resonators like prism or grating couplers when the depletion of the pump field is strong enough so that is can no longer be neglected. This means that we have to take into account the feedback between the signal field at 2(omega) circular frequency and the pump field at (omega) . Two different approaches are developed. The first one is a rigorous electromagnetic analysis based on the numerical integration of nonlinear Maxwell equations at both (omega) and 2(omega) frequencies, incorporated in a root-finding procedure to take the depletion into account. The second is based on a couple mode analysis which leads to a set of coupled mode equations governing the amplitudes of the pump and second harmonic frequency fields. These methods allow to predict that second- harmonic generation in prism or grating couplers can lead to optical bistability. Contrary to the Kerr-like bistability, this new type of bistability occurs not only at one side of the resonance maximum but on both sides provided the absolute value of the offset in the incident angle is above a threshold. The two approaches give numerical results in very good agreement. The coupled mode theory provides analytical predictions of the threshold value and brings physical insight on this new effect.
