Abstract

We present our experimental results of using a gain-clamped Er-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) to stabilize gain and signals in a WDM loop memory. Our results show that signal fluctuation can be significantly reduced and stabilized memory operations can be achieved.

We show that a wide-band noise source can be used to accurately measure the large-signal gain spectrum of an EDFA. Even in a range where spectral hole burning has a significant impact. Data is presented for a comparison of our technique, with the more conventional method.

Investigation of Transient Response of Erbium-doped Fiber Lasers by Semi-classical Theory

A. R. Bahrampour, M. Mahjoei, P. Jamali

The transient response of all optical gain clamped multi channel erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA's) and optical fiber inverter is studied by a semi-classical model. Using the semi-classical theory, the electric field interacting with mater is considered classical and the medium is quantized according to the equations of motion for density matrix. The rate equations and self consistency equations, which yield amplitude and phase of the electric fields of oscillator and amplifying channels are derived by considering Maxwell's equations and equation of motion of density matrix. The governing equations form a system of coupled partial differential equations. The relaxation oscillation behavior of stabilized multi channels erbium doped fiber amplifier and transient time response of an optical fiber inverter are simulated by the numerical solution of this system. The theoretical findings are in a good agreement with the previous experimental results that are reported.

Inhomogeneous Gain Saturation of Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers

Harry Chou, J. Stimple

An important application of Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers is in future wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) communication systems. In such systems one needs to consider gain cross saturation, i.e., how a signal at one wavelength affects gains at other wavelengths. A contributing factor to gain cross saturation is the inhomogeneous broadening of the gain medium. In this paper we demonstrate a technique for characterizing the inhomogeneous nature of the small-signal gain spectrum in the presence of a saturating signal.

Distributed gain and spectral gain-saturation effects in erbium doped fibers

Waldemar Roberto Ruziscka, A.O. Dal Forno, R. Passy +2 more

Distributed gain and spectral gain-saturation effects of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) were measured using a coherent reflectrometry technique. We find that the spectral performance can be improved if the gain needs are relaxed. A hole in the spectral dependence of the gain depletion was also observed, which could be related to the Spectral Hole Burning (SHB) phenomenon.
