Distribution of Electromagnetic Field Momentum in Dielectrics in Stipulation of Self-Induced Transparency

Abstract

The laws of formation of the impulse of electromagnetic radiation in dielectric environment for conditions self-induced transparency are considered. The insufficiency of the description of such impulse with the help of the equations Maxwell-Bloch is shown. The way of connection of an average number filling and energy of the impulse taking into account energy saturation of environment are offered. The calculation of an electrical component of the impulse is submitted.

Theory of self-induced transparency without the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes and phases

Andrei I. Maimistov

An analysis is made of the propagation of an ultrashort optical radiation pulse under conditions of inhomogeneous broadening of a resonance line. By dispensing with the approximation of a slowly varying complex pulse envelope, constraints on the duration are removed and any phase modulation is automatically taken into account. It is shown that if the boundary conditions determining the attenuation of the pulse at its leading edges are defined, the appropriate reduced Maxwell–Bloch equations can be integrated using the method of the inverse problem of scattering theory. Higher conservation laws, whose existence has been doubted, are found.

Polarization properties of self-induced transparency under Raman resonance

Ashat M. Basharov

Self-induced transparency under two-photon and Raman resonances is studied theoretically in the cases of small angular momentum of resonant transition and essentially different intensity of resonant waves. The last corresponds to the condition of experiment of Grabtchikov et al [Phys.Rev.Lett.81,5808 (1998)]. The problem with account to wave polarization was reduced to generalized Maxwell-Bloch equations which are exactly integrable by the inverse scattering transform method.

Quantum theory of self-induced transparency

André LeClair

It is known that classical electromagnetic radiation at a frequency in resonance with energy splittings of atoms in a dielectric medium can be described using the classical sine-Gordon equation. In this paper we quantize the electromagnetic field and compute quantum corrections to the classical results by using known results from the sine-Gordon quantum field theory. In particular, we compute the intensity of spontaneously emitted radiation using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz with boundary interactions.
