Abstract

This correspondence extends the application of the recently proposed stochastic decoding approach to decode linear block codes with high-density parity-check matrices and discusses its hardware complexity. Results demonstrate decoding performance close to floating-point iterative soft-input soft-output (SISO) decoding while offering nodes with considerably lower complexity compared to fixed-point SISO decoding.

SOGRAND decoding of LDPC codes

Ken R. Duffy, Jiewei Feng, Lukas Rapp +1 more

Long forward error correction codes are typically constructed by concatenating shorter component codes that are then decoded through iterative Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) of their components. The recently introduced Soft Output Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (SOGRAND) has been shown to enable accurate SISO component decoding for a broad range of component codes. Here we establish that by specializing its SISO computation to Single Parity Check codes, SOGRAND offers an alternative existing Check Node (CN) update for decoding Low Density Parity Check codes. Simulation results demonstrate similar or better decoding performance than Gallager's sum-product algorithm and norm-min-sum, while offering two distinct low complexity, hardware friendly CN update algorithms.

Two decoding algorithms for low-density parity-check codes

Telex M. N. Ngatched, Martin Bossert, A. Fahrner

In this paper, a low complexity algorithm for binary linear block codes is applied to low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and improvements are described, namely an extension to soft-decision decoding and a loop detection mechanism. For soft decoding, only one real-valued addition per code symbol is needed, while the remaining operations are only binary as in the hard decision case. The decoding performance is considerably increased by the loop detection. Simulation results are used to compare the performance with other known decoding strategies for LDPC codes, with the result that the presented algorithms offer excellent performance at smaller complexity.

Efficient algorithms for stochastic decoding of LDPC codes

Kuo-Lun Huang

The expanding demand for high-speed communications has resulted in development of high-throughput error-correcting techniques required by emerging communication standards. Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are a class of linear block codes that achieve near-capacity performance and have been selected as part of many digital communication standards. Stochastic computation has been proposed as a hardware efficient approach for decoding LDPC codes. Using stochastic computation, all messages in the iterative decoding process are represented by Bernoulli sequences. Computations on these sequences are performed bit-by-bit using simple logic operations. Furthermore, serial messages used in stochastic decoders help alleviate routing congestion in hardware implementation of decoder. These factors make stochastic decoding a low complexity alternative to implement LDPC decoders. In this dissertation, we analyze the characteristics of stochastic decoding and propose reduced-latency designs for stochastic LDPC decoders to achieve improved performance on various channel models.

Decoding of low-density codes with parity-check matrices composed of permutation matrices in an erasure channel

D. K. Zigangirov, Kamil Sh. Zigangirov

A lower bound for the number of iteratively correctable erasures is given, with application to the ensemble of LDPC codes with parity-check matrices composed of permutation matrices [1]. We assume that the Zyablov-Pinsker iterative decoding algorithm [2] is used. Its complexity is O ( N log N ), where N is the block length.

A method for convergence analysis of iterative probabilistic decoding

Miodrag J. Mihaljević, Jovan Dj. Golić

A novel analytical approach to performance evaluation of soft-decoding algorithms for binary linear block codes based on probabilistic iterative error correction is presented. A convergence condition establishing the critical noise rate below which the expected bit-error probability tends to zero is theoretically derived. It explains the capability of iterative probabilistic decoding of binary linear block codes with sparse parity-check matrices to correct, with probability close to one, error patterns with the number of errors (far) beyond half the code minimum distance. Systematic experiments conducted on truncated simplex codes seem to agree well with the convergence condition. The method may also be interesting for the theoretical analysis of the so-called turbo codes.
